Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Time magazine reports on a remarkable renaissance of religious belief among philosophers: In a quiet revolution in thought and arguments that hardly anyone could have foreseen only two decades ago, God is making a comeback. Most intriguingly, this is happening . . . in the crisp, intellectual circles of academic philosophers. . . . Now it is more respectable among philosophers than it has been for a generation to talk about the possibility of God's existence. Relying on boldness and rigorous thought, the movers and shakers of this quiet revolution have developed their theories against the rising tide of strict empiricism. Who are these tough-minded intellectuals, and why have they embraced Christian belief? In Philosophers Who Believe several key thinkers answer this question with unusual candor, warmth and brilliance. Contributors include: Alvin Plantinga University of Notre Dame, considered the world's leading Protestant philosopher of God.Basil Mitchell Oxford University, author of such groundbreaking books as The Justification of Religious Belief.Mortimer Adler Institute for Philosophical Research, renowned for his prolific writings and his work to revive an emphasis on the Great Books in higher education.Nicholas Wolterstorff Yale University, whose innovative work has led to invitations to deliver the distinguished Wilde Lectures at Oxford and Gifford Lectures in Scotland.Richard Swinburne Oxford University, the premier rational apologist of our age.Frederick Suppe University of Maryland at College Park, a premier philosopher of science.John Rist University of Toronto, expert on the late Ancient and early Medieval periods of philosophy.Linda Zagzebski Loyola Marymount University, recognized for her work on divine foreknowledge and human freedom.Stephen Davis Claremont McKenna College, author of books on topics ranging from the nature of God to the inspiration of Scripture.Terence Penelhum University of Calgary (professor emeritus), acclaimed for research on skepticism and religious belief in the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment eras.Nicholas Rescher University of Pittsburgh, prolific author and editor of prestigious scholarly journals. Winner of a Christianity Today book award for the original cloth edition, Philosophers Who Believe is now available in paperback. This collection of intellectual and spiritual autobiographies will be helpful--even inspirational--for students and teachers of philosophy as well as for readers who are simply curious about the connections between philosophy and Christian faith.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. After four Olympic Games, I began to reflect on the Why of my life as a professional snowboarder. For much of my young life and throughout most of my career, I believed that success would fulfill me. Most people do. I found myself driven for more- more medals, more exposure, more sponsors, and more people praising me for my performance. I realized that somewhere in the midst of successes and failures, accolades and achievements I lost myself. As I took inventory of all of it, I discovered that success did not equal fulfillment and if I didn't start living from a healthy place, my influence would end when my career did. It is easy to look at the lives of professional athletes through the lens of fame. This lens filters out the hard stuff and paints a picture of a life without process- But, life is all about process. In this book, I set out to define what motivates me while helping others discover what might be motivating them. I help people change the rose-colored lens that leaves them apathetic and entitled, to a lens that brings the whole picture into focus. This book begins at the pinnacle moment in my career thus far- The Salt Lake City Olympic Games. From there, I journey back to the plastic snowboard my dad bought me when I was seven years old and describe the highs and lows that have marked my career. As the book develops, I identify obstacles, struggles, and hindrances to success, while providing strategies to overcome them. I build in foundations of belief, hard work, and consistency, all built around the one thing that every person must discover no matter what they do- WHY.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. How can we believe in God and develop a healthy sense of self and of our enduring value in a world so often troubling, uncertain, and dark? When Faith Is Not Enough is a creative, honest discussion of doubt and the search for meaning that avoids pat answers while offering -- to readers from all walks of life -- positive reasons for persisting in the quest for faith. The first section of the book, The Shadow of a Doubt, takes the reality of doubt (and doubters) seriously. Clark helps readers to understand faith in a deeper way, presents a powerful case for the existence of God, offers hope for understanding the problem of God and human suffering, suggests positive ways for dealing with doubt, and affirms the excitement of embracing the adventure of life. The second section of the book, Searching for a Self, is a reflection on the meaning of life. Here Clark examines our most profound attempts to find meaning, happiness, and wholeness and shows why they lead to despair, sadness, and brokenness. Revisiting important themes in the writings of Kierkegaard and others, Clark explores the attempt to create a self of abiding value and shows that it is only through faith in God that our true selves are found and our deepest desires satisfied.…

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. 'A well-written and useful book. It gives a good account of some of the best results of recent work in the philosophy of religion by several Christian philosophers. It is especially useful in making those results accessible to readers with philosophical or theological interests but without an extensive background of study in recent philosophy.' - George I.
