Good+ A tight first edition copy of Mary Sturge Henderson's study of Victorian man of letters George Meredith, inscribed in the year of publication to Roger and Sara Bancroft Clark, the Quaker reformers, philanthropists and suffragists. Mary Sturge Henderson (18711961; later Gretton) was a British historian and author, who, like her inscribees, came from a liberal and reforming Quaker family: her grandfather was the Quaker abolitionist Joseph Sturge and her paternal aunt was Sophia Sturge (18491936), a Quaker suffragist, social reformer and peace campaigner. Similarly, Roger Clark (1871-1971) hailed from a radical and reforming Quaker family: his parents were William Stephens Clark and the suffragist Helen Bright. On the model of his parents' house, Millfield in Street, Somerset, Roger and Sarah Bancroft Clark's home, Whitenights, was a centre of Southwest intellectual activity and "an open house in line with their many cultural and philanthropic interests". Clark co-founded the Friends' League for Women's Suffrage, a Quaker group of reformers, while his American wife (and distant relative), Sarah Bancroft Clark (18771973) was a tax resister and suffragist.
