Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. One of the only ethnographic studies of Dalit women, this book gives a rich account of individual Dalit women's lives and documents a rise in patriarchy in the community. The author argues that as Dalits' economic and political position improves, 'honour' becomes crucial to social status. One of the ways Dalits accrue honour is by altering patterns of women's work, education and marriage and by adopting dominant caste gender practices. But Dalits are not simply becoming more like the upper castes they are simultaneously asserting a distinct, politicized Dalit identity, formed in direct opposition to the dominant castes. They are developing their own 'politics of culture'. Key to both, the author argues, is the respectability of women. This has significant effects on gender equality in the Dalit community.

Hardcover. Presumed First Edition/First printing. 288 p. Index. This book contains Modern-Day Canterbury Tales to Entertain, Enlighten & Empower. "You can't make this stuff up." You hear this refrain many times throughout The Innkeeper Tales. Modeled loosely on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, this collection of stories is told by business travelers whiling away a long day, stranded at The Abacrombie by an early spring blizzard. With Herman (the real-life Abacrombie owner) keeping the food and conversations going, each traveler tells a story drawn from his own life. All the stories are true, coming from conversations heard in the inn's breakfast room. Several men talk about how their career paths diverged quickly and completely from their original intent (and training). At the heart of the Tales is the rebuilding of lives, the refurbishing of the teller's sense of self. Like the listeners sprawled in the inn's breakfast room, the reader of The Innkeeper Tales will have a rich learning and laughing experience, with a big surprise at the end. Very good in very good dust jacket. Signed by author.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Mafia has become an indigenous term in the Indian subcontinent. Like Italian mobsters, the South Asian gangster politicians and violent entrepreneurs are known for inflicting brutal violence while simultaneously upholding vigilante justice inspiring fear and fantasy. But the term also refers to the diffuse spheres of crime, business and politics operating within a shadow world that is popularly referred to as the rule of the mafia, or Mafia Raj . Through intimate stories of the lives of powerful and aspiring bosses in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh a rookie neta from Dhaka, a selfstyled leader of the poor in Punjab, a henchman from Chittoor, smalltime brokers in Lahore, a female don in western UP, a political bigshot in Nawabganj, and a legendary figure in the bloodridden politics of South India this book illustrates their personal struggles for sovereignty on their move up the ladder of success. Ethnographically tracing the distinctive cultural milieu that such stories emerge from, the authors theorize what they call the art of bossing , providing nuanced ideas about crime, corruption and the lure of the strongman across the world.
