A good Farmer's paper is wnted - The Farmer's Journal (never so good as it might have been made) is now merged in Bell's Weekly Messenger; a huge mass of Tory materials, badly arranged, and evidently conducted without a particle of Agricultural Skill - It is, like some other things of the kind, you & I have known: a mere mercantile Speculation. Bad as it is, it is the best, I may say, the only farming paper we have - Surely something of the kind might be advantageously started - I wish you would mention the subject to our friend Chadwick, or Richd. The sitter wears an elegant eighteenth-century coat and powdered wig and rests his arm on a pedestal, suggesting his academic status. Beneath the portrait is a Latin inscription identifying his scholarly position. Johann Heumann (1711-1760) was a German jurist and professor of law associated with the University of Altdorf near Nuremberg. Educated in law during the early Enlightenment period, he became professor of public law at the university and contributed to legal scholarship and academic teaching within the German university system. P_0834.Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver, mezzotint specialist, publisher, and art dealer active in Augsburg. He was among the most important German practitioners of mezzotint in the eighteenth century. Haid produced numerous portraits of European nobility, scholars, clergy, and officials, often after paintings by contemporary artists. Through his publishing house he distributed portrait prints widely across the German states, contributing significantly to the popularity of mezzotint portraiture in Central Europe.Biography artist: The painter identified on the plate as 'Ihlen' remains somewhat obscure, likely an eighteenth-century portrait painter. Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, soling and creasing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
