In recent years, the intensive study of the Tertary has brought a number of results that in many cases have modified our opinions on the stratigraphical assignment of some units, on the palaeogeography, tectonics, etc. They have also laid more adequate foundations for a wide regional correlation. Although many questions have been settled, further new problems have arisen awaiting their unravelling. Nevertheless, the progress achieved marks a prominent stage on the way towards a uniform conception of the Tertiary history. The problem that is of primary importance for the wide-scale correlation and, therefore, must be preferentially solved is the establishment of a uniform stratigraphical scale that will eliminate all nomenclatorial errors and reduce to a minimum the interfering inflence of the various stratigraphical divisions in the individual regions. The present paper deals with the stratigraphy of the Miocene in general, with the continuously discussed problem of its lower and upper boundary, the content of individual "stages", and brings a proposal of its classification. The wide regional correlations, including a brief survey of the palaeogeography of the main Miocene sedimentary basins on a world scale, are also discussed. It is beyond doubt that a lot of problems, particularly those connected with stratigraphy, will still remain open and that a diversity of opinions will always exist. The aim of this work is to clarify at least some of the confusions in the stratigraphical conception; particular attention is paid to the history of the Miocene in Central Europe, which in any case is one of the classical Miocene areas and has recently been studied in detail.
