R. Palmer, an author and philologist whose linguistic knowledge was also employed at Bletchley Park's Hut Four; and Otto Jespersen, a Danish linguist, whose 1924 title, included here in its 1963 edition, makes for a 'perceptive' and 'entertaining' read.Of the collection, the first three volumes contain occasional vignette illustrations and diagrams, with vol 3, Daniel Jones' 'An Outline of English Phonetics', also featuring a monochrome frontispiece.
