Its primacy in the world is chiefly based on its extraordinarily large military capabilities and strong economy. U.S. leaders and citizens consider the U.S. primacy to be a force for good, which is intrinsic to American exceptionalism, i.e. the idea that the USA can and should help make the world a better place. As former president William Clinton put it: the United States is a 'beacon of hope to peoples around the world,' and is 'indispensable to the forging of stable political relations.' However, there are plenty of other countries whose leaders and citizens are not pleased with U.S. primacy, some of them even considering it to be dangerous. Concerns of other states have grown since George W. Bush has become president who - by making use of U.S. primacy - has been embarking on a more unilateral foreign policy than his predecessor has. Even close allies have become more worried about the United States' influence in world politics. In November 2003, some months after the latest U.S. invasion of Iraq, a poll conducted by BBC revealed that 53 percent of Europeans considered the United States to have a negative role on peace in the world. This essay illustrates why even the United States' allies have reason to fear and actually do fear U.S. primacy. This thesis is going to be substantiated by analyzing in detail the opposition of Germany and France, both close allies of the United States, to George W. Bush's plan to invade Iraq during the time that lead up to the invasion in March 2003. Initially, though, this essay is going to shed light on what makes the U.S. being the independent strongest actor in world politics and how its unilateralism can be made sense of in the context of the theory of structural realism, as outlined by Kenneth N. Waltz.

The analysis will mainly focus on wh-movement in interrogative sentences. First, the theory of Government and Binding is being briefly presented and the term 'wh-movement' is going to be defined. Subsequently, the different types of wh-movement occurring in languages are being presented together with wh-movement at LF. This introduction of the topic is going to be followed by an overview of prominent constraints that account for illicit wh-movement. The focus of analysis is going to be on Ross's (1967) island constraints and Chomsky's (1977) Subjacency. The description of wh-movement in interrogative sentences and its constraints will provide the theoretical foundation for the subsequent problem analysis: Specifically, this analysis addresses the question why there are some sentences that involve the violation of wh-islands but are acceptable for English native speakers. At the end of this essay, it is going to be briefly shown how wh-movement is being analyzed in the framework of the Minimalist Program, the successor of GB and current most prominent theory of Universal Grammar.

The theoretical foundation of the empirical study primarily lies in Merrill Swain's research on the output hypothesis in which she considers the activity of producing language - which she later defines as 'languaging' - to be of high importance for making progress in SLL. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: First it primarily supports the view that languaging can be an effective tool for language learning and eventually proposes its implementation in modern SLL. The empirical study is going to show that languaging can fulfil the metalinguistic function of Merrill Swain's output hypothesis. Second, this paper aims to raise both L2 learners' and teachers' awareness of the fact that many errors that trigger the need for languaging result from interferences of one's mother tongue or even another foreign language with the target language.

It is the global language of economy, technology, international politics, and the internet. In roughly 80% of communication in English, no native speakers are involved. As Smith/Nelson (1985) state: 'Native speakers are no longer the sole judges of what is intelligible in English' (p. 1). Only recently, scholars in applied linguistics have conducted research on the characteristics of the use of ELF (English as a lingua franca) in interactions between non-native speakers of English. For the purpose of ELF research, large corpora such as VOICE (Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English) have been built up, containing data from naturally occurring ELF exchanges. Also at the University of Tübingen a corpus of this kind is currently being compiled: the Tübingen Midwestern Corpus, which contains group discussions on a given economic topic. Most of the discussion participants are international students with different first language backgrounds. Some discussions also include a native speaker of English. There has to date not been a uniform and systematic approach regarding the analysis of comprehension problems in these Midwestern discussions. In this thesis I will design a structured set of questions for a standardized retrospective interview that serves to efficiently analyse comprehension problems. As the investigation of comprehension problems must go beyond an analysis of purely linguistic features of an interaction (syntax, morphology, phonology), situational circumstances in which the interaction takes place will also be taken into account. These standardized retrospective interview questions will be applied to four group discussions taken from the Midwestern corpus. For the analysis of the data collected from the retrospective interviews with participants from these discussions, Relevance Theory and discourse analysis are going to be applied.
