The aim of this book is to demonstrate a logical and systematic approach to the measurement of construction work by the use of a wide range of worked examples approriate to a first year course for quanitity surveying students leading to a degree, diploma or membership of the RICS or IQS. it will also be of value for students of other advanced courses (Institute of Building, City and Guilds and others), and on TEC courses, which require a knowledge of measurement at a very early stage. The group system of measurement is used in all examples. One chapter has been devoted to each group and each chapter opems with a description of a logical and systematic approach to measurement of work in that group. Instruction is provided in the important technique of writing descriptions and the authors demonstrate that the technique may be quickly acquired by the application of four simple rules. These have been applied to all descriptions in the worked examples and Standard Method of Measurement phraseology has been used throughout. The commentary to each example includes reference to the appropriate SMM rules. An important feature is the realistic presentation of material in accordance with current practice. This second edition has been fully revised and reset to take account of the 6th edition of the Standard Method of Measurement.
