This book presents a comprehensive overview of the Indo-Pacific region by assessing the complex and intricate geopolitics and strategic overtures in the region, with a particular focus on their implications for India. Unique in its approach, this book is comprehensive and future-oriented. It brings together the vast and diverse sub-themes on the Indo-Pacific while placing India at the center and mapping its prospects in the road ahead. Not only is the Indo-Pacific a pivotal part of India's foreign policy, but New Delhi's role in the Indo-Pacific theatre is considered crucial by regional and international stakeholders. The compilation of chapters by distinguished experts and scholars explores three key themes: India's emerging power and the rise of the Indo-Pacific, India as a critical link in the Quad diamond, and India's connection with actors beyond the Quad. Through these themes, the book provides a multidisciplinary and multinational approach to the India's role in the strategic regional landscape, with a focus on security through a discussion of India's air and naval strategies to respond to the growing flux in the region. Offering a timely insight into India's position and posture in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as its future trajectory, this book will be a valuable resource for India's military and strategic community, as well as international audiences looking as India's growing role in the region and beyond.

Nuclear Weapons and Conventional War: Changes in Indo-Pak Dynamics from 1971 to 2021/Manpreet Sethi. Narratives and Interactions. Fifty years after the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, it is time to recollect the great military campaigns and reflect on the lessons and changes that have helped make India a stronger power. The two-front 13-day war began with the anticipated Pakistan Air Force (PAF) pre-emptive strike on December 3, 1971. Code-named Operation Chengiz Khan , the PAF targeted 11 Indian Air Force (IAF) airbases and other installations. This also paved the way for India s formal entry into the war for East Pakistan s Independence, and ultimately, creation of Bangladesh. The war ended with surrender of Pakistan s Eastern Command in Dhaka on December 16, 1971 and over 93,000 Pakistani personnel were taken prisoner. The IAF was engaged in every facet of air operations, and air power was indeed a significant contributor to the historic victory. The 1971 air war was one among the last in which classic close combat took place between two major Air Forces. The air war saw clear air superiority being established against a major Air Force. The war ended with the birth of a nation. It was also the largest surrender of a force after the Second World War. The book records the diverse aspects of the air operations during the war in correct perspective and explores the lessons highlighting some outstanding examples of jointmanship. The book revisits India s national strategy during that period, and analyses how the 1971 War altered Pakistan s strategic posture that we see today.

India's development cooperation as a tool for strategic thinking in the neighbourhood: looking at the decade ahead/Urmi Tat. India began 2021 with Chinese troops still holding tactically important positions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), and despite eleven rounds of talks, de-escalation has not taken place significantly. More recently the very lethal second wave of COVID-19 hit India taking a massive toll of human lives. Globally, USA saw election of Joe Biden, a Democrat, after a very hotly contested polarised election. After 100 days of his Presidency, USA continues to progress most foreign policy issues with a hardline approach towards China. Biden meanwhile has decided to take forward his predecessor's decision to pullout of Afghanistan. USA clearly sees China as a competitor and challenger. China and the US are decoupling, disrupting bilateral flows of technology (semiconductors, cloud computing and 5G), talent, and investment. The 21st century is getting set for geostrategic play in Asia-pacific region. Biden is more open to participate and accept climate change challenges. With action shifting to the Indo-Pacific, Europe is having to take its calls and alignments. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) is engaging in greater interaction, but each partner is still taking individual calls on the extent of the alliance. Meanwhile, many South East Asian countries that have been directly affected by China's unilateral actions of usurping a large part of the South China Sea have become possible contenders to join QUAD-Plus. Some European powers, like France, also want to be part of the action in the area. China meanwhile continues to push its flag-ship Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for strategic expansion and influence. China has also been making threatening postures towards Taiwan, which many feels is a prelude to a possible invasion and forceful unification. But, Taiwan remains firm and with a resolve to defend and remain independent. As China makes massive investment offers to Iran, USA is using backdoor diplomacy to keep channels to Tehran open. The European Union is finding its feet in the changing global environment and trying to defend itself more aggressively against competing economic and political models. Europe is still not closing all doors towards China. Turkey's President Erdogan, was for long displaying provocative behaviour, and acting as a leader of the Islamic world. Ankara's relations with the US have hit new lows, and US sanctions are affecting the country as an investment destination. Despite general global economic slow-down and Covid, Asian economies will recover faster than those in the West. Donald Trump's "America first" has not worked. Extended US sanctions against Russia, have pushed Moscow, much to its dislike, closer to Beijing. A positive trend is the stability and improved relations among long-standing rivals in West Asia. Meanwhile India continues to push for "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" and driving indigenous defence production. Many of these subjects have been covered in this issue of the Asian Defence Review.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Among the many defining developments of the 21st Century is the Rise of China in every sphere of economic and military power. The world is going through a period of strategic uncertainty as China seeks to dislodge the United States as the leading power in Indo-Pacific region. While USA wants a "uni-polar world, but a bi-polar Asia", China is clearly working towards a "bi-polar world and uni-polar Asia". In its quest for what it thinks is its rightful place, China believes that the one who controls aerospace, controls the planet. China has been investing heavily in "aerospace" technologies and capabilities, which has been part of its so-called "peaceful rise" strategy. China has had major boundary disputes with a large number of its neighbours, including India. It has often tried to use muscle-flexing approach to resolve them. Chinese rising military power thus has implications for India. This book, China The Rising Aerospace Power - Implications for India is aimed at comprehensive evaluation of how the Chinese aerospace technologies, industrial capability, the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and various other elements of air and space are getting into place. In the very dynamic, and continuously evolving scenario, the book is meant to be a one stop place to understand the current status and unfolding future of Chinese aerospace power.

Over the past decade, Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean at large have become critically linked to the future of the Indo-Pacific. They have emerged as centres of global power play with increased strategic significance. The objective of this book is to analyse the rapidly changing dynamics in this vital region, with a particular focus on regional multilateral and minilateral set-ups, including QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), AUKUS (Australia-UK-US), and others. Positioning India at the centre, this book examines the delicate strategic balance of power in the Indian Ocean region, especially looking at air power, capacity building, and air-sea battle operations. It seeks to understand how like-minded Indo-Pacific countries can work together to enhance collaboration in varied domains ranging from nuclear energy to air power and cyber security to economic and supply chain cooperation. Through such collaborations, India and its like-minded partners can work together to reduce the predominance of any single nation, and ensure that they can actively shape a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. In this sense, the legacy multilateral institutions and the new minilaterals emerging within and across the region are aimed at securing a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific. The book comprehensively covers geostrategic issues in the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal, with focus on air power being the fulcrum of strategic balance in the region. With a cross-section of contributions from experienced and emerging scholars, this book is a must-read for practitioners and research analysts in the aforementioned domains.

Over the last decade, the world has undergone transformational changes with the centre of gravity shifting from the West to the East. The economic dynamism of the Asian continent has made it a robust engine for global growth and prosperity, giving credence to claims that we are now moving into the 'Asian Century'. Yet, the changing nature of conflicts and the ever-evolving geopolitical landscape has made stability and security in Asia (and the Indo-Pacific region at large) precarious. China's rise as an economic and geopolitical powerhouse has been accompanied by growing military strength and a willingness to employ aggressive (if not belligerent) strategies and tactics to achieve its interests. At the same time, instability in Pakistan, tensions over the Taiwan Strait, the war in Ukraine, and the militarisation in West Asia contribute to the delicate balance of security in the region. The acknowledgement of space as a war-fighting domain, combined with the rapid growth in defence technologies, has further complicated the defence landscape in Asia and the Indo-Pacific today. Against this background, this year's edition of the Asian Defence Review focuses on aerospace power in Asia's changing security environment. It originates from CAPS' research focus on India's extended neighbourhoodthe Indo-Pacific regionand aerospace power. It presents the perspectives of a cross-section of authors, who are experts in their respective domains, to paint a picture of the defence.

Asian region in the year gone by, in addition to second wave of Covid-19, faced multiple challenges in almost every field, ranging from political disruption, economic crisis, return of Taliban to power and diplomatic uncertainty associated with it. The events ranged at one end from changing dimensions of India-China military standoff, military coup in Malaysia, and US withdrawal from Afghanistan to events like vaccine diplomacy, medical aid collaboration, cyber security and sharing of critical resources for economic growth in the region. Keeping pace with the rapid development of events in the region and resulting instability, Asian Defence Review (ADR) 2022 is focusing on impact of these events on relations amongst the neighbouring nations of the region. This issue of the ADR covers the theme "Diplomacy in Turmoil: A Year of Turbulence" divided into three sections. The first section focuses on the major quests for military pre-dominance and geo-economic competition; the second section traces the factors that defined-redefined the geopolitical forces in Asia; and the third section analyzes the diplomatic sway amidst the turmoil in the region. Effectively we cover the entire regional arc from West Asia to Indo-Pacific, emerging global concern, and the outlook for future.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Very early in aviation, aerial platforms began being used for air strikes and air combat. A flying Ace, fighter Ace or Air Ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The concept of the Ace emerged in 1915 during World War I, at the same time as aerial dogfighting. It was a term often also used to create heroes for domestic audiences, in what were otherwise wars of attrition. The individual combat actions of Aces were widely reported and disseminated as a chivalrous knight reminiscent to ancient era. It also was intended to demoralise the adversary. For a brief early period when air-to-air combat was just being invented, the exceptionally skilled pilot could shape the battle in the skies, and approximately five percent of combat pilots account for the majority of air-to-air victories. French newspapers were the first to describe Adolphe Pégoud, as an Ace in World War I, and later Manfred von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron , scored the most officially accepted kills. There were a large number of Air Aces in World War II. Germany clearly led the figures with high scores on the Eastern front with Soviet Union. There were Air Aces later in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq-Iran, and Arab-Israeli wars. This book covers 25 of the greatest Air Aces across wars, nationalities and countries.
