The Abbe de Choisy (1644-1724) was a promiscuous cross-dresser, raised wearing girl's clothes, but not homosexual, the Marquise-Marquis de Banneville was similarly raised but was homosexual, authorship of his account (1st pub. 1695) is uncertain though Choisy almost certainly had a hand in it. 14 cm x 22 cm.

By a whim of his mother, Francois Timoleon de Choisy-better known as the Abbé de Choisy-was dressed as a girl until the age of 18. After a short spell in male attire he became, by all accounts, the classic transvestite-a male heterosexual who never attempted to disguise his biological sex while going about in public in full female attire. Choisy's fascination with feminine accoutrements made him something of an expert on women's fashions, and prominent society women even brought their daughters to him for advice. His increasingly extravagant toilettes and exhibitionist behavior eventually earned him a public rebuke and exile from Paris. This study recounts the scandalous and entertaining escapades for which Choisy is best known today in a light, intimate, and accessible style. These authentic memoirs provide a firsthand account of manners and morals in late 17th-century society as well as remarkably exact portraits of his contemporaries, constituting a remarkable document in the history of transvestism. Bajo un barniz frivolo y ligero, el abate describe esa 'vida extremosa' en sus memorias, en las que aborda cuestiones tan importantes como la búsqueda de la identidad sexual y la realización del deseo por encima de cualquier prohibición, y cómo el individuo pierde el equilibrio emocional cuando la sociedad se empeña en contrariar inclinaciones tan naturales. Lo que hace a las memorias de Choisy doblemente preciosas es que, si bien otros personajes de su tiempo buscaron transformarse en mujeres -entre ellos el hermano de Luis XIV, Felipe de Orleans- sólo Choisy se atrevió a rasgar el velo secreto y a escribir sobre su asombrosa transformación en madame de Sancy y en la condesa Des Barres. Lo hizo de un modo absolutamente sincero a petición de una virtuosa dama, la señora de Lambert, de la que era consejero espiritual, pero nunca llegó a publicar su confesión e incluso quemó algunos fragmentos. A su muerte, el abate de Langlet-Dufresnoy copió clandestinamente parte de las memorias de Choisy y las imprimió fuera de Francia, donde circularon y se vendieron como mercancía prohibida. En 1862 el escritor y erudito Paul Lacroix hizo una edición fiable y completa que tituló Aventuras del abate de Choisy vestido de mujer, que es la que ofrecemos al público por primera vez en lengua castellana.
