A surgeon by profession, Beadnell was an adamant rationalist and sceptic who served as president of the Rationalist Press Association from 1940 to 1947. He here attributes the rise of spiritualism to the widespread loss of the First World War. The particular psychical work that Beadnell (1872-1947) argues against is The Reality of Psychic Phenomena: Raps, Levitations, Etc. (1916) by the Irish engineer, William Jackson Crawford (1881-1920). Crawford was an associate of the medium Kathleen Goligher (1898-1972), famous for her physical manifestations, including levitations and ectoplasm. Octavo, pp. 24.
