First Edition. Only Edition. This describes Charles IX's entry into Bayonne (southwestern France) on 30 May 1565 and the ensuing month of celebrations with his mother (Catherine de' Medici), sister (Elisabeth, Queen of Spain) and hundreds of courtiers and nobles. Entertainments included songs, plays with elaborate stage scenery,… speeches, masquerades, poetry (attributed to Ronsard), a giant-and-dwarf comedic duo and a riverboat trip. Sumptuous clothing was at the center of all public displays, and roughly half the text describes costume - velvet slippers, gold braid, wide ribbons of embroidery, rich fabrics of all colors, threads of precious metals, men dressed as Egyptians, the king à la Troyen, women as harpies. The account of an extravagant knightly competition, the Battle between Virtues and Love, fills twenty leaves. each of the eighteen participants presented to women in the audience a spectacular gold pendant displaying a mottoed emblematic cameo of his personal device. Each pendant woodcut is superbly executed and accompanied by an account of the presentation ceremony. Nine pendants, captioned in Greek, represent the Virtues; the other nine, captioned in Latin, concern Love. Five of the Greek Virtue emblems later passed to printer Fédéric II Morel, who used them as devices. The sole copy of the Recueil in U.S. collections is considerably smaller (216 x 152 mm., in a contemporary binding). Zustand: Very good. - Over 130 words penned in a secretarial hand on an 11-3/4 inch high by 7-5/8 inch wide buff paper with an attached leaf. The document grants an individual permission to leave and return with his entourage. "Nous luy avons donne 'conge' de permission d'y aller a condition de retourner a sa [___] au premier Ma…udemt." and more specifically "permission de les laissee [____] passer et repasser avec son Equipage et ses Valets." Signed "Louis de Valois" with his seal stamped in blind at bottom left. The letter is annotated in a different hand along the top "Conge du 16-9[-]ve 1632". The document is docketed on the attached leaf. Folded vertically and horizontally. Very good. The son of Charles d'Angouleme and grandson of the King of France Charles IX, Louis-Emmanuel de Valois d'Angouleme (1596-1653) was Count of Auvergne and Governor of Provence, holding the office of Colonel-General of the Cavalry from 1624 and on April 17 1635 Marechal de camp. He was appointed Governor of the Provence beginning January 1638. Refusing orders from Cardinal Mazarin during "la Fronde", a series of French civil wars occurring in the midst of the Franco-Spanish war, Louis de Valois was recalled to court in 1650 and in 1653 was stripped of his governorship.
