This is an autobiography of Morris Cohen written jointly with Charles Drage. Cohen, brought up in the Jewish community of London's East End, joined the Shanghai Police after serving in the First World War, and became a.d.c .and bodyguard to the politician Sun Yat-Sen. He identified strongly with Chinese nationalism, spoke Chinese fluently, and rose to become a General in the Kuomintang army. After the communist takeover he was forced to leave China, but retained his links to the country, which he visited again on a couple of occasions, including the November 1966 centenary celebrations for Sun Yat-Sen, whom he had so greatly admired.

This is an excellent read, the story of Morris Abraham Cohen (1877-1970) who was aide-de-camp to Sun Yat-sen and a general in the Chinese National Revolutionary Army and was incarcerated in Stanley POW camp by the Japanese from 1941 until the end of 1943 when he was part of a rare prisoner swap.
