First edition, first impression, uncommon in the jacket. "If one were asked to name the book which voiced most expressively and with the greatest literary art the sentiments of the best type of junior British officer in the War, one would find it hard to select a better than this" (Falls); Lengel calls it "one of the best British memoirs". Douie served in France and Flanders with the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment, and in Italy with the 1st Garrison Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers. "An insightful meditation on how soldiers experienced and remembered the war, and a critique of the disillusionment school of war writing. Douie does not provide a narrative of his day-to-day life at the front, which he considers too tedious to chronicle in detail, but illustrates his memoir with scenes from the Somme and Flanders, where he spent several weeks stationed on the Belgian coast" (Lengel). Falls p.193, awarding two stars (of a maximum three) for "a very good book"; Lengel 511. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed textured paper boards, paper label to spine and front cover. With dust jacket illustrated with Orpen's "Thinker on the Butte de Warlencourt". Scattered foxing to edges of text block and internally; jacket spine sunned and with a few nicks, chips, and short closed tears. A very good copy.
