Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 239, [1] pages. Illustrations. Card with a head and shoulders color illustration from the front of the dust jacket laid in. This classic was first published in 1923. Evelyn Charles Henry Vivian (19 October 1882 21 May 1947) was the pseudonym of Charles Henry Canne…ll, a British editor and writer of fantasy and supernatural, detective novels and stories. Cannell was a former soldier in the Boer War and journalist for The Daily Telegraph. Cannell began writing novels under the pen-name "E. Charles Vivian" in 1907. Cannell started writing fantastic stories for the arts magazine Colour and the aviation journal Flying (which Cannell edited after leaving the Telegraph) in 191718, sometimes publishing them under the pseudonym "A.K. Walton". Vivian is best known for his Lost World fantasy novels such as City of Wonder and his series of novels featuring supernatural detective Gregory George Gordon Green or "Gees" which he wrote under his "Jack Mann" pseudonym. Vivian also wrote several science-fiction stories, including the novel Star Dust about a scientist who can create gold. Vivian also published fiction under several other pseudonyms, including Westerns as "Barry Lynd". Vivian also edited three British pulp magazines. From 1918 to 1922 Vivian edited The Novel Magazine, and later, for the publisher Walter Hutchinson (18871950), Hutchinson's Adventure-Story Magazine (which serialized three of Vivian's novels) and Hutchinson's Mystery-Story Magazine. Outside the field of fiction, Vivian wrote for the book A History of Aeronautics. Fields of Sleep is a fantasy novel by British writer E. C. Vivian. It was first published in the United Kingdom in 1923 by Hutchinson. In the United States, the novel first appeared in the magazine Famous Fantastic Mysteries under the title The Valley of Silent Men. An edition with illustrations by Thomas Canty was published by Donald M. Grant, Publisher, Inc. in 1980. A sequel, People of the Darkness, appeared in 1924. The novel concerns English adventurer Victor Marshall who is hired to find a fellow Englishman who is lost in Asiatic Sapelung. Marshall discovers a hidden valley and is imprisoned by its inhabitants who are descended from ancient Chaldean colonists. The inhabitants are dependent on a narcotic flower whose fragrance produces ecstasy. Marshall finds his countryman living among the inhabitants. After a flood, the flowers are destroyed and without it, the inhabitants including Marshall's countryman perish. Not dependent on the flower, Marshall survives. Thomas Canty (born 1952) is an illustrator and book designer in the field of fantasy literature. Thomas Canty is credited with pioneering a style of book cover painting and design influenced by such 19th century romantic artists as Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and the Pre-Raphaelites. His paintings are featured each year on the cover of the award-winning Year's Best Fantasy and Horror volumes, as well as on numerous other books in the fantasy field and beyond, including: Patricia Kennealy's Keltiad series. He has worked as an art director and designer for Donald M. Grant Publisher, and collaborated on many projects with editor/author Terri Windling, such as the Fairy Tales series (Ace Books and Tor Books) and the Snow White, Blood Red series (Avon). His poem, A Monster at Christmas was published by Grant in 1985. Canty has won two World Fantasy Awards for Best Artist, among other honors. His work has been exhibited at the Society of Illustrators gallery in New York, as well as in museums and galleries across the United States. He is a founding member of The Newbury Studio and a member of The Endicott Studio. Reprint edition--limited to 1200 copies [stated]. Thomas Canty (illustrator).
