In recent past in Sri Lanka, a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-lingual and multi-cultural county of this subcontinent faced historic conflict between ethnic Sinhalese and ethnic Tamils which ultimately led to the formation of a violent /extremist organisation, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) in early 1970s. At the time of Independence several factors were added and around the independence it became a burning citizenship issue between India and Sri Lanka. Often with the tacit consent of authorities public humiliation of Tamil community increased due to vote bank politics that took a violent shape in all walks of life. From early 1980s till May 2009, Sri Lanka witnessed an unparallel ethnic declared war led by LTTE. Today, although there is no ethnic conflicts in Sri Lanka, Tamils are yet to be recognised as a mainstream race of the island.

Applied Geomorphology has come up as a very important branch of earth sciences particularly with the advancement in its techniques to evaluate and tackle problems associated with man's occupancy of earth space. Of late, it has acquired enormous significance with the application of geomorphic understanding to the analysis and solution of myriad problems concerning land occupancy, resource utilisation environmental management and planning or problems of similar nature. In the beginning, the landforms studies were carried out mostly with aid of qualitative techniques but lately various quantitative techniques have been introduced along side the use of aerial photographs and satellite imageries for identifying morphological characteristics of landforms and evaluation of terrain which have further enhanced the value of this branch of geography. In this Book Applied Geomorphology: A study an attempt has been made to evaluate the morphometric aspects of terrain both quantitatively and qualitatively. The study-area has been delineated into morphometric units of different orders. In the process of terrain categorization as well as in identification of geomorphic units remote sensing techniques have also been made use of. The geomorphic attributes have been correlated with the distribution of settlements and arable land in the study area. And the problem of soil erosion in various terrains have been examined along with impact analysis of ground water condition on distribution of rural settlements and arable land. The present work is a pioneer attempt to peruse terrain features and associated problems of resource rich region. It provides adequate references, data base and methodology to those interested in analysis terrain evaluation and its influence on settlement and landuse. The inferences drawn herein may prove to be helpful to planners and users equally. It is hoped that the scholars working in the field of applied geomorphology, geology, settlement and landuse planning, environmental management, civil engineering and other allied disciplines will benefit from this work and will be quick to follow the methods and techniques used therein to achieve their objectives.

While music and medicine and music therapy are now widely practised in the hospitals in the western countries, India is very much lagging behind in such pursuits, despite the rich tradition of ragas in Indian classical music. Encouraged by the successful implementation and researches on western music as a therapeutic tool in the developed countries, this study was undertaken based on Hindustani ragas on Indian patients. The implications of the present findings will definitely encourage other professional statisticians and medical community to come forward and collaborate with doctors in different areas of medicine and promoting and establishing music and music therapy as a profession in India. Last but not the least, music especially classical music has the power to improve one's conscience and hence can help us in becoming a better human being. The methodology adopted in the study has been widely practiced in deciding on the medical treatment for the specific situations in the case of neurological studies as well. It is hoped that this study will pave the way for more such studies in the area of music therapy.

The nation has come a long way in increasing production of food for security as well as nutritional security. The inter relationship of agriculture, food, cooking processes and health are highly complex and profoundly significant. It is complex relationships as change in any one component have effects on the viability and functioning of the other. India is home to a quarter of world's 795 million hungry people worldwide where the triple burden of malnutrition coexists. The pervasive micronutrient deficiency is known as HIDDEN HUNGER. World Bank data indicates that India has one of the world's highest demographics of children suffering from malnutrition. If food systems, based in agriculture, cannot provide all the essential nutrients in adequate quantities to sustain human life during all seasons, diseases ensue, societies suffer and development efforts stagnate. The book chapters in present book address these issues of malnutrition at the grassroots level where adoption of a multi-sectoral nutrition-sensitive approach is required. It works closely with the local communities to bring out individuals and families from the shackles of malnutrition and create nutrition smart villages. It is a model village where communities understand and take charge of their nutrition requirements, integrating agriculture with natural resource management, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
