262 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition in English. First edition in English. 262 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. An very early work of fiction featuring a scientific detective, set in New York and featuring forensic detective William Dow. This copy in a variant binding it was also issued by the same publisher, in the Favorite Edition, in maroon cloth, with ads for other Favorite Edition titles. Hubin notes, "Though given as the author, Champlin is actually the translator of this work: 'La Femme de Cire', by Rene De Pont-Jest, Paris, 1883'". The title page and copyright page make no mention of Rene de Pont-Just, nor the original French text; a comparison of the original French text suggests considerable editorial discretion in the translation. Grace V. Lord (who wrote under the name Virginia Champlin) also translated or adapted work by Jules Verne, Alphonse Daudet and other French authors. She died tragically, in May of 1885 (in the year in which Shadowed by a Detective was published), at approximately forty years of age, while walking along a sidewalk near her home in Boston, when she was crushed by falling lumber during a construction accident. A scarce publication. Not in Wright; Hubin, Crime Fiction, pp. 74, 151. OCLC: 15204827 (4 locations) Dark blue cloth, stamped in gold on spine. Bumped at top edge (with tiny closed tear), text is evenly tanned (printed on acidic paper), a few leaves of text have short, creased tears, and nicks, in blank margins (due to acidic paper). Very good copy, with the fragile floral endpapers very fresh and bright.
