Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. Monte Carlo, Editions André Sauret, 1960, 1963, 1969, 1974, and 1984. Large quarto, five volumes, 221, 209, 181, 183 and 251 pages with well over a thousand illustrations (many in colour) plus all 24 original lithographs (21 in colour); in addition, the dustwrappers for the first four volumes are also original colour lithographs. Cloth; the first two volumes have minimal foxing to the top edges, endpapers and plain flaps of the dustwrappers; the third volume is a little foxed and marked on the edges, with renewed endpapers, and shows minor signs of use (there is a commercial gallery bookplate on the recto of an early blank leaf); the fourth volume has minimal foxing to the top edge and endpapers, and some small ink splashes to the bottom edge; the fifth volume has a little foxing to the endpapers; overall, an excellent set with the dustwrappers in excellent condition, with a few trifling blemishes (the first one is slightly rubbed, with the spine slightly torn at the head and a little sunned; the second one is slightly rubbed, and a little bumped at the foot of the front hinge; the third one is a little rubbed, with the ends of the spine lightly discoloured (by offsetting from two small pieces of tape, now removed, once present to reinforce the ends, and to close a short tear to the head); the original transparent dustwrapper protectors are still present on all but the third volume. Specific details of each volume of this definitive catalogue raisonné are as follows. [Volume I] CAIN, Julien: The Lithographs of Chagall, [1922-1957]. [Volume II] MOURLOT, Fernand: The Lithographs of Chagall, 1957-1962. [Volume III] CAIN, Julien, Fernand MOURLOT and Charles SORLIER: Chagall Lithographe, 1962-1968. [Volume IV] SORLIER, Charles and Fernand MOURLOT: Chagall Lithographe, 1969-1973. [Volume V] SORLIER, Charles: Chagall Lithographe, 1974-1979. All lithographs are present as called for: the frontispiece, ten other plates and the dustwrapper with the first volume; the frontispiece, ten other plates and the dustwrapper with the second volume; the frontispiece and the dustwrapper with the third volume; and the frontispiece and the dustwrapper with the fourth volume. The first two volumes are in English (translated from the French by Maria Jolas); the others are in the original French. A sixth and final volume, 'Chagall Lithographs, 1980-1985', also by Charles Sorlier, was published in 1986; it is readily available and inexpensive, as it contains no original lithographs. [5 items].
