The William Sydney Chadwick (b.1882) was born in England and emigrated to South Africa in the 1920s. He was a transport rider in Rhodesia, one time member of the Bechuanaland Protectorate Police and professional hunter in that he earned a living selling the ivory and lions skins from his trophies. This book contains stories of the life of eight animals: the buffalo, lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, crocodile, hippopotamus, and hyena. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards and fading to the spine. There is damp spotting on the front board and to a lesser extent on the rear board. The bottom corners are lightly bumped and the spine ends are more heavily bumped with a little damage to the cloth. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered foxing. The foxing is mostly light although some of the pages adjacent to the plates are a bit more heavily affected. The front and rear endpapers are browned with some staining near the bottom edge and two names have been written on the front fixed endpaper.
