Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Gonçalo da Silveira was a Jesuit Priest born and educated in Portugal. He was a missionary in India, acting as provincial superior for the Jesuits, before he began his work in southern Africa. He first arrived at Sofala (Mozambique) in 1560, and proceeded to Otongwe near Cape Corrientes.During his stay of seven weeks in Cape Corrientes, he instructed and baptized the Makaranga chief, Gamba, and about 450 people of his kraal. Towards the end of the year, he began his expedition up the Zambezi River to the capital of the Monomotapa. This appears to have been the N'Pande kraal, close to the M'Zingesi River, a southern tributary of the Zambezi. He arrived in Monomotapa on 26 December 1560, and remained there until his death. During this period he baptized the chief and a large number of his subjects. However, at the same time, Arabs from Mozambique had begun to defame the missionary - a plot instigated by one of their priests.Due to this slander, da Silveira was strangled to death in his hut, by order of the chief, on 16 March 1561.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'This book is a synthesis of contributions drawn from the 12th Nitrogen Workshop held at the University of Exeter, UK. It provides a valuable compilation of current research, aimed at reconciling the environmental and economic components of N cycling within the context of a productive agricultural industry. The book is divided into seven main sections, which examine systematically, the nature of the problems associated with losses of N and a range of possible solutions. Section 1, 'Drivers towards sustainability-why change ' identifies the need to adopt new strategies to avoid losses to the environment. Section 2 considers the options for 'Matching supply with demand', followed by the reasons for, and means of 'Controlling losses to air' and to 'water' in section 3 and 4. Section 5 describes the challenges of 'Reconciling productivity with environmental considerations'. The remaining sections describe some mathematical models to assist the researcher, with the final section devoted to reports from the 'Themed Working Groups' which debated the following topical questions: Organic matter: does it matter, or can technology overcome most problems related to soil fertility Optimising N additions: can we integrate fertilizer use and manure use Controlling gaseous N emissions: what is achievable Missing N: is the solution in dissolved N Pollution problems: mitigation, or are we swapping one form of pollution for another System studies: do we need them, or can they be replaced by desktop studies Model answers: can we improve their level of confidence and applicability This book will be of value to researchers, policy makers and all those wishing to promote more efficient use of N.'.

(London, Taylor and Francis), 1921. Blank wrapper. In: "The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science" Sixth Series, Vol.42, No. 252, December 1921. Pp. 873-1024, textillustr. a. 1 plate. (Entire issue offered). Chadwick & Bieler's paper: pp. 923-940, textillustr. First printingof this milestone paper in which the strong nuclear forces are mentioned for the first time."It was only in 1921 that Chadwick had first shown that, at very small distances, the interactions of alpha particles with the atomic nucleus did not follow exactly the inverse square law predicted from the repulsion of their positive electrical scharges. Chadwick concluded that his experiments showed that these nuclear forces are of "very great intensity". According to Pais, this is THE FIRST PUBLISHED STATEMENT ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF A STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE. This 'new force' interpretation was disputed untill well into 1920s."(Hey & Walters)."In any event, Chadwick and Bieler's final conclusion avoid all reference to a possible electromagnetic cause for the deviations from the simple theory: "The present experiments do not seem to throw any light on the nature of the law of variation of the forces at the seat of an electric charge, but merely show that the forces are of very great intensity. It is our task to find some field of force which will reproduce these effects." I consider this statement, made in 1921, as marking the birth of the strong interaction."(Pais in "Inward Bound", p. 240).
