Questo volume presenta l'eccezionale inventiva dell'industria della stampa di cartoline, che ha combinato elementi della cultura pop con l'immagine fotografica. Al centro c'è la splendida interazione tra le cosiddette cartoline fantasy e l'arte d'avanguardia degli anni 20 e 30, i dadaisti e i surrealisti. Per creare le curiosità visive delle cartoline-fantasia, i fotografi lavoravano con montaggio, doppia esposizione, distorsioni ottiche, primi piani e altri trucchi tecnici. Paul Eluard, André Breton o Salvador Dalí erano appassionati collezionisti di cartoline fantasy. Hannah Höch, Herbert Bayer, Man Ray e molti altri le utilizzarono come modelli per i loro lavori.
