Alinhando Nelson Gonçalves e Torquato Neto, o poeta capixaba fez das tripas coração, e depois do coração tutano. Foi infiel aos gêneros musicais que experimentou e com os quais brincou. Não se deixou pautar pela indústria fonográfica da época. Pelo contrário, brigou com ela. Mas também brigou consigo mesmo. Parecia não caber no papel que tinham criado para ele, nem no papel que ele mesmo tinha criado para si.
