Lieven De Cauter studeerde kunstgeschiedenis en filosofie aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In 1991 verscheen van hem 'Het hiernamaals van de kunst' met monografieën over musea en kunstenaars en bespiegelingen over de situatie van de hedendaagse beeldende kunst. Hij promoveerde in 1996 op een scriptie over Walter Benjamin met als titel De Dwerg in de schaakautomaat. Benjamin's verborgen leer. Tegenwoordig doceert hij filosofie aan de dansschool PARTS en de filmschool RITS, beide in Brussel en aan de Willem De Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. Hiernaast publiceert hij regelmatig in de tijdschriften De Witte Raaf, Archis, Oase.
