"The American pioneers fought for this land, cleared it and planted hopefully through a long period of germination, in order finally to lay it open to the sun of permanent achievement. To their descendants is presented herein the portrait of Cornelius Cole, pioneer, citizen and statesman, who, at the time of his death in Nineteen Hundred and Twenty-Four, had lived during the lifetime of every President of the United States with the exception of George Washington. His activities were and integral part of the history of the Unites States for three-quarters of a century, and the events in which he participated portray the colorful story of California from the time of the gold seeker to that of the realtor. This volume presumes to furnish only the canvas and frame for the portrait of himself which Cornelius Cole has given the world in his own words and deeds. Only those events have been touched upon which are essential as background for a true and consistent characterization and which help to reach beyond the form of his life into its substance and spirit" - Introduction Slipcase with light sunning. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: very good- to very good. Quarto. (vii), 361pp. Original burgundy colored dust jacket with black lettering on covers and spine. Burgundy colored paper boards over tan fabric with pasted on tan label with black lettering on spine. Cut papers. Frontispiece. Inscribed and signed in interior front cover. Frémont's… initial notability came from her family: she was the daughter of Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton and the wife of military officer, explorer and politician, John C. Frémont. She wrote many stories that were printed in popular magazines of the time as well as several books of historical value. Her writings, which helped support her family during times of financial difficulty, were memoirs of her husband's, and her own, time in the American Westback when the West was an exotic frontier. A great supporter of her husband, who was one of the first two Senators of the new U.S. state of California and a Governor of the Territory of Arizona, she was outspoken on political issues and a determined opponent of slavery, which was excluded from the formation of California. By maintaining a high level of political involvement during a period that was extremely unfavorable for women, Jessie Benton Frémont proved herself to be years ahead of her time. - wikipedia This memorial begins with an introduction and twenty subsequent chapters. At rear of book is the appendix: Personal recollections of Jessie Benton Fremont, Bibliography, Periodicals and Pamphlets, Newspapers, Fremont family papers, Publications on Jessie Benton Fremont, Birth and death dates of the Fremont family concluding with Index. Small tear to lower right front dust jacket front cover. Minor chipping to top of dj front cover. Sunning of dj spine. Rubbing to head of dj spine. Light foxing to binding rear cover.
