This event was commemorated in a variety of ways in many diflerent countries. It was Ireland's privilege to mark this occasion by staging the International Folk Epic Conference, organized by the Department of Irish Folklore at University College Dublin. This Conference also commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment in 1935 of the former Irish Folklore Commission whose work is carried on by the Department of Irish Folklore. In the first week of September 1985, a gathering of scholars from all over the world assembled to discuss, under the headings Form, Function and Fantasy, the folk epic traditions of many lands and peoples. The papers they delivered - 28 in all- had, therefore, a wide geographic spread with experts on the African, Arabic, Faroese, Icelandic, Indian, Irish, Slavic, Turkish and Welsh traditions to the fore. Special attention was paid to the Kalevala itself, of course, and one day of the Conference was set aside for a discussion of the Fiannaiocht tradition common to Ireland and Scotland. The Heroic Process casts new light on many aspects of the subject of folk epic, bringing together under one cover outstanding contributions by leading experts in this field.

This book is an engaging, often eye-opening, account of h…is experience as a child and as a young man in three distinctive cultures, now radically changed.He describes the Tyrone of the 1940s and 1950s where Protestant and Catholic neighbours shared their lives at a personal level, but where institutions were divisive. His father's prosperous business was ruined because of a political event he supported. The schools and the curriculum were dividers of the two communities. The border was a nuisance to everyone.As a post-graduate student in the 1960s, he took up residence in the Donegal Gaeltacht of Na Cruacha, where 'real old Irish' was still spoken. He carried out a study of the placenames of Na Cruacha, recording the area's distinctive music and speech.Shortly afterwards his research took him to the far north of Europe, to Sápmi (an area extending over parts of four countries, and generally known as Lapland). There he immersed himself in the culture and language of the Sámi people, at a time when their native language and customs were belittled and under threat.

The exploits of Ole Mørk Sandvik (1875-1976) in the collection of Norwegian folk music and his close involvement in the development of Norwegian church music earned him a special place in the hearts of the Norwegian people. .His long life was dedicated to music and song of which he was an avid… and gifted collector, and he was the author of a wide range of books and articles on aspects of Norwegian music both sacred and profane. He became the driving force behind the establishment of the Music Collection at Oslo University Library. His name is well-known in his native country, but less so in Ireland and Scotland with whose traditional song cultures he fashioned a relationship in the summer and autumn of 1927. His three-month long research trip concentrated on parts of counties Cork and Kerry in the south west of Ireland and also included the cities of Cork and Dublin and a brief excursion to the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. His findings appeared in an article entitled "Keltiske melodier og norsk folkemusikk" published in Norsk Musikksgransknings Aarbok (1940). The present volume contains a description of his travels in Ireland and Scotland in pursuit of Gaelic song, includes an account of surviving archive holdings and presents selected audio recordings relating to the field work he conducted. Professor emeritus Séamas Ó Catháin has a long-standing interest in Celtic-Nordic studies particularly in the field of folklore. He held the Chair of Irish Folklore at University College Dublin and was Director of the National Folklore Collection.
