No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original illustrated single leaf from an early edition of Alberto da Castello's influential Renaissance devotional work devoted to meditation upon the Rosary, with a particularly attractive woodcut headed "Maria & ioseph co[n] sua fatiche" — Mary and Joseph at their labours. The image presents the Holy Family within an intimate domestic workshop: St Joseph is shown vigorously working as a carpenter among timber, a bench and woodworking tools, while the Virgin Mary sits nearby engaged in needlework and the infant Christ lies swaddled in a cradle at her feet. The principal scene is surrounded by an elaborate Renaissance woodcut border incorporating angels, devotional figures, grotesques, foliage and ornamental detail, with groups of worshippers flanking the prominent inscription AVE MARIA along the lower border. The reverse contains Italian letterpress text concerning Herod and the Massacre of the Innocents, including the biblical tradition of Rachel mourning for her children. Alberto da Castello, a Dominican friar and devotional writer, compiled the Rosario della gloriosa Vergine Maria as an illustrated aid to structured prayer, combining vernacular text with narrative woodcuts intended to guide contemplation of the mysteries of Christ and the Virgin. The work first appeared at Venice in 1521 and became sufficiently successful to pass through numerous subsequent sixteenth-century editions; this 1524 printing by Sessa and Ravani therefore belongs to the early publication history of one of the significant illustrated Rosary manuals of Renaissance Italy. Particularly appealing for its detailed depiction of St Joseph as a working craftsman and for the intimate juxtaposition of carpentry, sewing and the sleeping Christ Child. Original woodcut and letterpress on paper, approximately 9.6 × 13.7 cm. Very good condition overall, retaining original margins, with light age-toning, occasional minor spotting and marking, slight handling wear and a small marginal nick; the woodcut impression remains strong and detailed and the text to the reverse is clear and legible. Uncoloured. An evocative and highly decorative original survival of Venetian devotional printing from 1524.…

Vellum. Zustand: Good. No Dust Jacket. 253, [2], [i] leaves (last leaf blank). Signatures: A-Z8 Aa-Ii8. Numerous pagination errors throughout. 190 full page woodcut engravings. Small octavo 4" x 6" (10 cm x 15 cm), contemporary vellum with handwritten title to the spine. Marbled edges. Large woodcut title vignette with verse from the Old Testament and insignum "P", all within black ruled border. Each text page is within compartmentalized borders containing decorations of birds, fruits, leaves, cherubs, etc. Many foliated initials. In Italian, Gothic type. The title page gives the title but no other information, license pages give a permission date of April 5, 1521, so that is the earliest this could have been printed. Both Sessa and Piero Ravani in Venice have been credited with the publication. The 1522 edition, with the same pagination and plates, indicates the publisher as Sessa and Ravani. This copy seems to conform to OCLC 973475672 (as well as 1170992678) which has the same elisions (without ligatures) in the printed title, and which is dated as "1521? " Condition is good. The vellum has some old stains and wear but is sound. Text is unmarked, no worming, some darkening, quires CC-EE are darker than the surrounding quires, and there is some staining/darkening near the back of the book. The Pater Noster pages are darkened and slightly smudged. Da Castello was a Venetian, a Dominican monk, who published many religious books in Italian and Latin. In 1521 Castello published the popular and "richly decorated" Rosary of the Glorious Virgin Mary. Among the 190 illustrations are 15 picture rosary medallions displayed in 3 groups, each representing the 5 petals of a large rose. In Castello's 15 roundels the 15th figure still shows Christ in glory, but "in the center of the rose itself sits the enthroned Virgin wearing a crown." (Winston-Allen, Stories of the Rose). A beautiful devotional book with nearly every leaf with a full-page woodcut illustrating the biblical commentary in question. In an attractive post-incunable -- and possible first -- edition. ; Woodcuts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 512 pages.…

Nato a Venezia."(?) [EN] In 8. º (15x9, 7 cm), with 252, [iv] folios, printed in Venice, in 1521. Binding: contemporary full calf tooled blank at folders and spine. Remains of closing laces. Printed in Italian with gothic types, presenting all pages with the text inside typographical frames; and illustrated with 190 beautiful full-page wood cut engravings. Copy in an excellent condition and, as usual, the last blank folio is not present. Very rare first edition of a famous work from which there are only two copies recorded at the Italian public libraries. The authorship of the prints is attributable to the Dominican Friar Alberto da Castello which is identified as the author at the preliminary authorization pages. Although no specific bibliographic data is present in this first edition (author, date, place, and printer), the authorship of the work and the pictures are attributable to the Dominican Friar Alberto da Castello, identified as author or editor at the authorizations of the Venician Inquisition, given in 1521, printed at the reverse of folio Ae, and in front of folio A3 . There is an edition in the following year with exactly the same page layout and number of prints, with the following imprint: "Venetia: per Marchio Sessa et Piero di Rauani, 1522"; what could possibly indicate that these were also the printers of the first edition (?). Alberto da Castello (ca. 1460-1522) is also known as: Alberto di Castello - Albertus Castellanus - Castello, Alberto da - Castellano, Alberto - Castellani, Alberto. First edition of this work that had about 40 editions during the 16th and 17th Centuries. Refs.: - BMSTC (Italian), p. 156. - Brunet Sup.
