Binding design in an art nouveau style with three curved stem flowers in a darker green to the light green cloth of the cover. Similar pictorial and lettering design to spine but dulled by moderate general toning to the spine surface. Snugly bound and clean. Enigmatic gift inscription to front endpage dated 1898. Title page has been archivally reinforced in the gutter where it had become weak. Illustrated with three plates, including tissue guarded frontis. Several pages opened a little roughly at the front edge. Overall solid and neat. VG-.

Pilkington Was Born In Cambridge, England. Her Father Died When She Was 15 Years Old And She Went To Live With Her Grandfather. The Man Who Had Taken Over Her Father's Medical Practice Eventually Became Her Husband In 1786. While He Was Away Working As A Naval Surgeon, She Took Work As A Governess. She Published Over Forty Novels In The Years Leading Up To 1825, Many Of Them For Children. She Also Wrote For Periodicals, Notably The Lady's Monthly Museum ? Which She Left Over Poor Compensation[5] ? And The Lady's Magazine.

Contemporary bookseller s label and later ownership signature on front pastedown. ß First edition. Detailed instructions and ideas for decorative projects in the home, ranging from embroidery and vase painting, to treatments of walls, windows and furniture. Two of the plates depict room designs by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the leaf following the title-page reprints part of an address by William Morris. The chromolithographs are interesting from a technical perspective, appearing to take advantage of the color subtleties made possible by stippling, and by the crosshatching technique more commonly found in chromoxylography.
