Leather. Zustand: Near Fine. Birket Foster (illustrator). A very smart copy of William Falconer's poem, The Shipwreck, in a lovely, full calf prize binding. Rebound in a smart, full calf, prize winner binding, with a gilt motif of Forest School to the front cover. This work is comprised of The Shipwreck, a poem by Scottish writer William Falconer, as well as a life of the author by Scottish journalist Robert Carruthers. Falconer's writing was concerned mostly with the sea, having also written a dictionary of marine terminology. He wrote 'The Shipwreck' in 1762, inspired by many years spent at sea; he was lost on the frigate 'Aurora' in 1770 when it was lost at sea, a tragic coincidence. With beautifully illustrations throughout by popular Victorian watercolourist and engraver, Birket Foster. With an ink inscription of 'Second Form Prize awarded to G. L. Baker' dated July 1876, signed by the headteacher. Rebound in full calf, prize winner binding, with a gilt motif of Forest School to the front cover. Externally, excellent, with light rubbing to the extremities and the occasional mark to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Ink inscription to first blank. Near Fine. book.
