Williams Deacon's Bank Ltd, which was founded in Manchester in 1836 and subsequently headquartered in London, had a large network of branches in the north-west of England. It was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1930. In 1970 it was merged with Glyn, Mills & Co and The National Bank to form Williams & Glyn's Bank. Carpenter was a director of the bank for 21 years, serving as chairman for 12 years. He was a leading Manchester industrialist, and among the numerous positions listed in his entry in Who Was Who, he was for 40 years the chairman and managing director of the Manchester cotton manufacturers Greg Brothers & Co., a leading member of the Cotton and Rayon Merchants' Association, the Association of British Chambers of Commerce, and the International Chamber of Commerce. He was knighted in 1951, 'For services as President, Manchester Chamber of Commerce'. Six items. The first five in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with the first three bearing rust stains from paperclips. ONE: Typed speech [by Carpenter, as the bank's chairman] on the opening of the bank's new head office. Headed 'THE OPENING: | My Lord Mayor, Mr. Governor, Your Grace, My Lords, Your Worship [last two words deleted, as the Mayor of Salford was not present] and Gentlemen.' 4pp., 12mo. With pencil and ink autograph emendations. The speech concludes: 'Finally, we are truly grateful to the Governor of the Bank of England for so kindly accepting our invitation to officially open the building. In the course of eleven years Chairmanship of the Bank, I have had ample opportunity to appreciate the invaluable part which the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street plays in the good conduct of the nation's monetary affairs. THREE: Typed Note Signed from William ('Bill') Lyth, editor of the Sheffield Telegraph. On the newspaper's letterhead, 17 November 1959. Returning 'the notes for your speech which you were kind enough to lend me last evening. They were of considerable use in checking the speech taken by our shorthand writer.' FOUR: Printed 'Statement by the Chairman, Sir Eric A. Carpenter, O.B.E., on the Report and Accounts for the year ended 31st December, 1952, to be submitted at the Annual General Meeting in Manchester on Thursday, February 12th, 1953.' 4pp., 8vo. Fairhurst', 'The Old Building' and 'Training Bank Staff'. The article carries the following note: 'This article and those on the old buildings of the bank and on training bank staff, were compiled from information supplied by the management of the bank'. Lederer, co-author of "The Ugly American" (1958), about a naval commander who applied military discipline at home when taking over the housework for his injured wife. 8 x 10 inches. Carpenter, who was knighted in 1951, 'For services as President, Manchester Chamber of Commerce', was a leading Manchester industrialist and banker. Among the numerous positions listed in his entry in Who Was Who, he was for 40 years the chairman and managing director of the Manchester cotton manufacturers Greg Brothers & Co., and for 21 years a director of Williams Deacon's Bank (serving as chairman for 12 years), a leading member of the Cotton and Rayon Merchants' Association, the Association of British Chambers of Commerce, and the International Chamber of Commerce. 17pp., landscape 12mo, paginated 1, 1A, 2-17. On seventeen leaves punched in corner and attached with metal-tipped tie to grey card covers, on which the title and other details are printed. Carpenter begins by explaining that 'Mr. Lockhart, the Headmaster of my old school, invited me to give the address at the Founders' Day Service', and explains that he is going to begin the address 'on a rather personal note', giving the biblical quotation which he will take as his text. He continues: 'My father passed away when I was about eight years of age and I have therefore few very vivid recollections of his influences upon me, but amongst them is one of being taken [to] what was then a country walk from Heaton Mersey to Didsbury Parish Church for service on Sunday mornings.' After a reference to his mother he continues: 'It is nearly 37 years since, at the age of 15, I completed five years of boarding-school days at Cheadle Hulme and became a very young "Old Boy."' He continues for a while with a discussion of the school's influence on him, it having 'led' him to 'the firm [Greg Brothers] with which I have been privileged to spend the whole of my business life', and also having 'fitted' him 'to enter upon voluntary work in the Chamber of Commerce and other organisations in the commercial field. That has led to my being honoured and entrusted with the presidency of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, and, incidentally, to my presence in this pulpit this morning.' He turns to the need for voluntary work and 'Service before Need', 'pride in our work', 'our standards of honesty' and the 'desperate need of leadership' in the world. The address ends with a pious exhortation. Scarce: no other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

Minor soil and corner bends, about fine. Eric Carpenter captures the youthful beauty of swim champ Esther Williams during her early career. The Red Skelton comedy that she was about to film called Co-Ed would develop into her first star vehicle, Bathing Beauty. The custom-made swimsuit designed by Irene is described in printed blurb on verso. Ink stamped still number also present.

In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with rusty staple and paperclip, and slight creasing to the last three leaves of the main paper. Minor pencil emendations throughout the main paper by Carpenter.
