Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Octavo, 9" x 5 3/4." pp 63 [1]. Smooth quarter-bound tan calf over original brown and blue marbled boards. Clear dust jacket. Gilt lettering on spines. Binding very sound. Hand-set black and purple Caslon type on high quality laid paper. Pages unopened, very clean. No. 184 of 200 copies. This volume only (of the set) printed at the Cuala Press. This edition is the first volume in the fine press series Irish Writings in the Age of Swift, published by the Dublin-based Cadenus Press. The prose selections from this volume are extracts taken from Irish sermons, periodical essays, economic, political, philosophical and scientific treatises, controversial writings, contemporary history and biography, parliamentary and other public papers, speeches and prayers. Each extract has a short introduction and includes biographical information on the author. An advertisement for the series explains the publishing outlet's mission and purpose: "The Cadenus Press has been established to make available the works of lesser-known Irish writers, particularly those writing in English during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.together, [these works] will provide an unparalleled insight into the background against which Swift's Irish work was written." (Carpenter, "Advertisement for 'Irish Writings.'") The series catered to a general, rather than an academic, audience. It presented 17th and 18th century works using the printing techniques of the period, namely a handpress and handmade laid paper. Liam Miller, a former architect and founder of the Dolmen Press, expertly designed the layout and typography of each book. The series exhibits the craftsmanship of Irish fine press printing at the time.
