WINNER OF THE LONDON HELLENIC PRIZE SHORTLISTED FOR THE ANGLO-HELLENIC RUNICMAN AWARD A SUNDAY TIMES AND SPECTATOR BOOK OF THE YEAR 'A gloriously intimate tour of the body in antiquity' Gavin Francis 'A triumph . an extraordinary book that stopped me in my tracks' Peter Frankopan The Greek and Roman body is often seen as flawless - cast from life in buff bronze and white marble, to sit upon a pedestal. But this, of course, is a lie. Here, classicist Caroline Vout reaches beyond texts and galleries to expose Greek and Roman bodies for what they truly were: anxious, ailing, imperfect, diverse, and responsible for a legacy as lasting as their statues. Taking us on a gruesome, thrilling journey, she taps into the questions that those in the Greek and Roman worlds asked about their bodies - where do we come from? What makes us different from gods and animals? What happens to our bodies, and the forces that govern them, when we die? You've seen the paintings, read the philosophers and heard the myths - now here's the classical body in all its flesh and blood glory. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Zustand: New. 2013. Hardcover. The Greeks and Romans were not shy about sex. In classical Greece, statues of erect penises served as boundary-stones and signposts. In Rome, marble satyrs and nymphs grappled in gardens. How are we to make sense of this abundance of sexual imagery? Were these images seductive, shocking, humorous? This title answers these questions. Num Pages: 256 pages, 200 colour illustrations. BIC Classification: 1QDAG; 1QDAR; 3D; HBJD; HBLA; HBTB; JHBK5. Category: (G) General (US: Trade). Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2016. 1st paperback ed. XVIII,327p. Paperback. ?This volume has been long in the making, since it has its origin in a conference held in Nottingham in 2003, at which the reviewer was present. The result was worth the wait, as we now have a thoughtful introduction by the two editors and ten contributions over a broad range of subjects and perspectives, which nevertheless cover enough common ground to provide reasonable cohesion for the reader. The main aim is to present ?a visual perspective on Greek and Latin epic?; the topics range from Homer to modern opera and film. (?) Lovatt?s part of the introduction summaries both the different occasions at which we may spot the visual in epic narrative, and the specifies of the epic genre. (?) Her survey (?) makes very instructive reading. Vout, too, starts from Homer, and considers the question whether the visual arts in the course of the tradition developed a specific practice to ?capture the grandeur of epic vision? The aim of the volume then, is to throw some light on the hypertextual character of any reaction to the Homeric poems, be they textual or visual, thereby ?probing and reassessing the workings of the genre? (CHRISTIANE REITZ in Mnemosyne, p.704).
