In den WarenkorbBrochure/Pamphlet. Zustand: Good Only. This published letter provides fascinating insight into the marriage of Queen Caroline and George IV in the early nineteenth century. This interesting letter Queen Caroline wrote to King George IV in 1820 provides insight into the couples' estrangement and how the press favoured Caroline. Having married in 1795, the couple separated a year later shortly after the birth of their only child, Princess Charlotte. Despite separating, Caroline refused to divorce George, and when rumours began circulating that Caroline had taken lovers the King's dignitaries began investigating her private life. Despite finding no foundation to the rumours Caroline's access to her daughter was restricted. In the present letter, published by Limbird, Caroline shares her feelings of persecution and argues how the King's actions have shaken faith in the legal system, before discussing George's attempt to divorce her by introducing the Pains and Penalties Bill in 1820. Caroline was so popular with the British people that the bill was withdrawn by the Liverpool ministry. A pamphlet. Externally, a little worn. Rather edge worn to the fore edge, less to to the top and bottom edges. The front page has a tea stain, traces of which can be seen until page 4. Internally, the binding is a little tender. Pages are a little age-toned with some moderate foxing. Good Only. None (illustrator). book.…

In den Warenkorb1p., on 29 x 7 cm piece of unwatermarked laid paper (probably cut down), with no indication of printer or date. Printed with the long s. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. 64 lines, arranged in eight eight-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'BRITAIN! brave and generous nation, | Listen to my plaintive strain, | Tho' exalted be my station! | Day and night I sigh in pain; | Here I came a helpless stranger, | With no friend to take my part, | Braved the stormy ocean's danger, | From home for ever to depart.' She appeals to her 'Good Uncle' (i.e. King George III, whose wife is described as 'your Queen, a pious lady'), asking him how he can stand by and 'Let a shameless woman trample | On decency's offended laws'. (A later reference to 'the Countess' makes it clear that this is Frances Villiers, Countess of Jersey.) The last stanza reads: 'There from empty pomp retreating, | Childless mother, widow'd wife! | My lost titles none repeating, | Let me lead a peaceful life. | When you think on my sad story, | Britons, drop a pitying tear! | And fair England's fame and glory | Shall to me be ever dear!' Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library, or on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat, and no other reference discovered. From the papers of Sir William Hamilton (1788-1877), British Consul at Boulogne-sur-Mer from 1826 to 1873.…

In den WarenkorbThe Repudiation of Queen Caroline [Trial]. Caroline of Brunswick, Queen of England, [1768-1821], Defendant. The Attempt to Divorce the Princess of Wales Impartially Considered; More Particularly with Reference to the Probability of its Success. London: Printed for J. Ridgway and Sons, 1816. 25, [1] pp. Lacking final advertisement leaf. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in early textured cloth, printed label to front board, edges untrimmed. Light toning and foxing to interior. $250. * Third edition, one of four from the same year. The repudiation of Queen Caroline by King George IV was one of the most sensational events in English history. Estranged soon after their marriage, Caroline was eventually banished to Europe after the birth of their daughter, Princess Charlotte Augusta. In 1820 her husband's accession to the throne brought her back to Britain. The King asked his ministers to get rid of her. After she refused a monetary offer to ask for a divorce, the Earl of Liverpool introduced The Pains and Penalties Bill to the House of Lords in July 1820 in order to strip Caroline of her title and dissolve her marriage. (The bill alleged that Caroline had an affair with a servant, Bartolomeo Bergami, while in Italy.) The bill was approved by the House of Lords, but it was not submitted to the House of Commons, where it would have been defeated. Despite the King's best attempts, Caroline remained a popular favorite. Published in 1816, our anonymous work presciently concludes that "there is every reason to believe that the design of dissolving the existing marriage of the Prince Regent will fail" and that "the expectations of the Princess Charlotte will not be defeated." All editions are scarce; OCLC and Library Hub locate 1 copy of the third edition (University of St. Andrews). …

In den WarenkorbSouvenirs of a Royal Divorce Trial: Lady Denman Apparently Giving to a Friend Examples of the Hands of Three of the Main Figures on Queen Caroline's Legal Defence Team, Including An Example of the Hand of Her Husband, Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench [Manuscript Archive]. [Caroline of Brunswick, Queen Consort (1768-1821)]. [Autograph Notes from 3 of Queen Caroline's Defense Attorneys].2 pair of manuscripts, one 7-1/4" x 4-1/2," (18.4 x 11.4 cm) the other 8" x 6-1/2" (20.3 x 16.5 cm), which bear the hands of three chief figures of the legal team for Queen Caroline, the pair of MSS apparently having been given by Lady Denman to a Mrs. Impey in 1833, with a covering MS leaf, 9" x 7-1/2" (22.8 x 19 cm) whose recto gives the addressee's name likely in Lady Denman's hand, above which is an endorsement likely in Mrs. Impey's hand. Typed transcripts included. Light edgewear and soiling, fold lines, very good condition overall. $1,000. * A little more than a decade earlier, Denman had been one of the lead counsel on the defence team of Queen Caroline, and had been conspicuously brilliant thereon. Mrs. Impey appears to have been sufficiently entranced with the celebrity of the defence team more than a decade later that she showed interest in having relics, examples of the hands, of three of the main figures on the team: Thomas Denman (1779-1854), later Lord Chief Justice; Henry Brougham (1778-1868), later Lord Chancellor; and Sir John Williams (1777-1846), later Puisne Justice at the Court of King's Bench. This desire was answered in full by Lady Denman, who provided examples of the hands for Mrs. Impey, whereupon Impey carefully annotated the group with headnotes for posterity. This is possibly the earliest example to survive of an autograph hunter seeking specifically autographs of a legal defence team from any trial: we are not aware of an earlier instance. The trial was a landmark in legal history, and this clutch of autographs may well be a landmark in the history of the collecting of legal manuscripts.…
