Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 169-192. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to William Speed Hill. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Although everyone pays lip service to Shakespeare's mastery of blank verse, few analysts of his style have considered metrical technique as a source of meaning. One reason for neglect of Shakespeare's metrics is the lack of a broadly accepted theoretical framework. Professional prosodists in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries ornamented the elements of traditional metrical analysis with such an array of "allowable" deviations, explained in an arcane and often inappropriately classical terminology, that it lost all value as a means of understanding verse. Furthermore, opposing camps in the wars of the prosodists disputed stress prosody versus temporal prosody, and the battle became a series of inconclusive skirmishes, with the stressers having a numerical superiority but never completely vanquishing their foes. As linguists took an interest in metrics - beginning with Otto Jespersen in 1900, and increasing markedly in the past thirty years - other deficiencies of the traditional approach became evident, the most obvious being its limitation to two levels of stress and its rigid adherence to the foot. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 503-521. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to William Speed Hill. - A good and clean copy. - From the text: When Falstaff addresses the newly crowned heir of Henry IV as King Hal, his political error correctly describes the new kings reconciliation of his multiple selvesa Jack, a sneak-up (1, III. iii.83), Harry Monmouth, Hotspurs sword-and-buckler Prince of Wales (I.iii.227), Harry [who succeeds] Harry (2, V.ii.49). In his effort to penetrate his royal role, the Prince plays such a variety of parts that he sometimes seems more a series of figures in a kaleidoscope than a single dramatic character in the round. The object of the present article is to demonstrate that Hal, Harry, the Prince, and Harry England (H5, III.v.48) are one person whose development we can trace from a seemingly wanton, and effeminate boy (R2, V.iii.10), through his fathers doubtfully worthy heir, to a triumphant majesty as Notre très cher filz Henry, Roy dAngleterre, Héritier de France (V.ii.357-58). What I shall trace more particularly is how Hal/Henry talks: the names by which others speak of him signify who he appears to be; how he himself speaks reveals who he is or is becoming.
