In den WarenkorbLarge, thin 4to, pp. [6], 5, [1], viii leaves; uncut; text in Latin and Italian; engraved vignette portrait of Horace on title page; 8 engraved plates (including 2 aquatints) drawn by Johann Riepenhausen and Franz Catel, and engraved by Riepenhausen, Caracciolo and Testa; contemporary green morocco, triple gilt and blind ruled b…orders on covers, smooth gilt spine laid out in 6 compartments, gilt-lettered direct in 1; binding worn, with scrapes and moderate rubbing, one corner cracked; overall a good looking copy only, but internally clean and the binding is sound. A note on the of the front free endpaper: "Printed at the expense of Eliz Dutchess of Devonshire - presentation copy from her, with auto inscription to Mr. Elmsley." Indeed, on the verso of the half-title is the presentation, in faint but legible ink: "Mr. Elmesley from Elz. Dch. of Devonshire." Elizabeth Christiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (née Hervey, 1758-1824) was an English aristocrat, and polyamorist who had a number of affairs, not the least of whom was the translator of this satire, the Cardinal Ercole Consalvi. The book was privately printed and the plates were given by the Dutchess. Only 150 copies were printed with these illustrations (a few more were bound without them). The Elmesley in question is almost certainly Peter Elmesley (1774-1825) the renown English classicist who devoted his life to the study of classical authors and manuscripts, and who in 1818 is known to have been in Italy studying at Florence. Mills College Check List 1007 (noting that the work was edited by the Dutchess); not in Riedel-Horatiana; Brooks 1212.
