In 1895, the British authorities sent the Chitral military expedition to relieve the fort at Chitral, which was under siege after a local coup following the death of the old ruler. An intervening British force of about 400 men was besieged in the fort until it was relieved by two expeditions, a small one from Gilgit and a larger one from Peshawar. The authors of this history were brothers, both acting as correspondents for The Times in when the expedition was dispatched. The record of the book is based on The Gazette of India, The Blue Book on Chitral affairs presented to the Houses of Parliament in England, and correspondence by the authors with The Times itself.

This work was first serialized in McClure's Magazine in November of 1896. The first full novelization was published in America by Doubleday in 1897, followed by the first English edition a month later.

(1945-1947 ?), oblong photo-album, 22 x 27cm, contains 9 photographs, size 11,5 x 16,5 cm, each mounted on a separate leaf. album in grey buckram , no titles, Cloth a bit soiled, interior fine. With a printed name list of the members of the wing. The photographs consist of a group portrait, views from the outside and inside of the stylish villa where they resided. The last picture (taken from the house) shows the Rhine river with two destroyed bridges.

First published on 31 Dec 1874, the latest edition stated is 11 June 1965, with small corrections up to 1974. The main map, natural scale 1:900,000, shows the Omani coast from the Daimaniyat Islands to Ras al Junaiz, with Matruh, Muscat, Ras al Hadd etc labelled, and the Iranian-Pakistani side from Jask to Karachi, with views and elevations of several Jebels, and main roads and caravan routes shown by continuous lines. A smaller map shows Gwatar (Jiwani) Bay on a larger scale. The ms annotations mark the location of a "Submarine Exercise Area" below Gwadar, and another below Pasni, with annotations dated 1988-90 in the line of "small corrections" to the lower edge, also flagging that a new edition of this map appeared in 1992.
