27 watercolours on wove paper tipped onto brown paper album leaves with ms. captions in ink and pencil. 8 signed "A Scott" or "AS", 1 signed "K P Scott". Oblong 4to. Recently bound in fine full blue morocco by Trevor Lloyd, MBE. Tooled in gilt, with titles to upper board. A few leaves mounted on matching brown paper to resize, w…hilst preserving captions. One watercolour (Shirley Street) with old closed tears, glued down with no loss. Occasional glue marks beside botanical pieces where perhaps tissue guards have been removed, else very good. 27 leaves. Bahamas, A lively and beautiful album. Watercolours of the Bahamas are uncommon from this period. Captain Andrew Scott Jr. (1798-1888) was a native of Portland, Maine. A seafarer and trader he moved in mid-century to Flushing New York, where he is listed in the 1850 census as a ship's captain with real estate value of $1500. He travelled widely and made small watercolour sketches whenever he could, a trait continued by his daughter Catherine "Kate" Parker Scott Boyd (1836-1922). In his early years, Scott served on the Enterprise during the War of 1812, and was aboard when she came into port with her captured prize HMS Boxer. One of the watercolours in this album is signed by Kate, a delicate greyscale study of Nassau women "picking over wrecked cotton". This unusual image brings to life what is almost certainly the practice of cargo salvage after a shipwreck, a Bahamian tradition dating back to the earliest days of colonisation, and a mainstay of the economy into the nineteenth century. For context, in the year 1856, three years before this painting was made, the total salvaged cargo brought into Nassau was valued at £96,304, and constituted more than two thirds of the goods exported from the islands. Amongst the other topographical watercolours there are several colourful views which give a fine impression of this bustling Caribbean port. In particular, a waterfront scene shows throngs of people gathered in the street, and another ocean view presents a horizon busy with sails. Architectural landmarks like Government House, Fort Fincastle and Fort Charlotte are featured, along with a lovely image of the Nassau Light House, shown in the "Storm of Oct 26 1858". There are several street views, as well as beach and landscapes, and a particularly handsome composition of Shirley Street showing large established residences with shuttered windows. The latter portion of this album concerns the natural history of the Bahamas, with many fine and detailed studies of indigenous flowers, often with notes concerning size, colour and classification. The painting of the "night belle" for example, has a pencil observation to one side commenting "petals more like thin muslin or lace". The final two images of this series show the more lively side of Caribbean nature, with a hairy and life-like tarantula, as well as a study of a "snake nut". The latter is a probably brosimum alicastrum, also known as the Maya nut. A full list of captions: 1. "Silk Cotton Tree Nassau. N.P. Bahamas (+ flower beneath this)" [the flower is painted on the verso] 2. "Nassau -/57" 3. "Fort Charlotte Nassau Bahamas about 1860 (when nearly blind)" 4. "Nassau March 4th 1857 Bahamas" 5. "Nassau Light House Storm of October 26th 1858. Height 70 feet above water" 6. "Street Nassau 1889" [surely 1859?] 7. "Cotton tree Nassau N.P. Bahamas." 8. "Picking over wrecked cotton at Nassau, Bahamas, by Kate P Scott 1859" 9. "East view from Hog I[sland] Nassau" 10. "Government Houses Nassau 1859" 11. "East beach, Nassau Bahamas" 12. 18 watercolours on wove paper, 7 signed "A Scott", pasted or tipped onto brown paper album leaves, with ms captions to leaves in ink and pencil. Recently bound in handsome maroon morocco with gilt tooling and titles by Trevor Lloyd MBE. Three leaves remargined or mounted, with original captions preserved. Very good. Cuba, Captai…n Andrew Scott Jr. (1798-1888) was a native of Portland, Maine. A sea-farer and trader he moved in mid-century to Flushing New York, where he is listed in the 1850 census as a ship's captain with real estate value of $1500. He travelled widely and made small watercolour sketches whenever he could, showing a proficiency and confident use of colour beyond that of a mere amateur. In his early years, Scott served on the Enterprise during the War of 1812, and was aboard when she came into port with her captured prize HMS Boxer. The present album comprises a fine series of watercolour studies made in and around Cuba in the late 1850s. The subjects offer a broad insight into Cuban society in the mid-nineteenth century, from grand plazas and churches to a humble shack at the mouth of a river, with the traditional racks of drying fish, and a picture of what is almost certainly the beginning of construction on the church in rural sugar town Sagua la Grande. There is a fine bustling street view of the Spanish style balconied houses down Hernandez Street, and another image showing enslaved workers labouring at the Wilson estate at Camarioca near San Juan. (Slavery wasn't fully abolished in Cuba until 1886.) The waterfront views include a picture made whilst quarantining on St Jago Island (the largest of the Cape Verdes), and several boldly colourful sunsets. The captions are as follow: 1. "Plaza Santiago de Cuba" 2. "Church Sagua la grande" 3. "St Jago from Fabo's(?) house" 4. "St Jago from Quarantine" 5. "St Jago from Tierra Fiegger(?)" 6. "Mercedes Street Havana - 1857" 7. "St Juan (Dr Wilson's) near St Jago" 8. "Paralta near St Jago" 9. "Sp. Frigate "Esperanza" Havana. Jany 1857" 10. "Facou Theatre Havana. 1857" 11. "St Francisco Church Havana 1857" 12. "Near Havana. 1857" 13. "Moro Havana from the Punta Gateway 1857 Havana - Lopez garroted here" 14. "Cuba Fountain Havana" 15. "Havana" [waterfront scene] 16. "Moro Santiago de Cuba" 17. "Entrance of the Sagua la grande river" 18. "wild passiflora Cuba".

Hardcover. Zustand: Good +. Unrecorded Times Book Club edition. This unusual printing was offered through the The Times (London) as part of the newly formed Times Book Club, organized by Horace Everett Hooper and C. F. Moberly Bell in 1905. The Book Club was set up to run a circulating library, its main aim to increase Times cir…culation, which it did. Subscribers paid 3 pounds 18s per year, on the promise that a subscriber would get "the books he asked for on the very day he asked for them" (Publisher's Weekly, 1906, Vol. 70, p1304). When the books became "second-hand", they were to be sold to the subscribers at reduced prices. This would be one of those copies. It is in a slightly different binding than the first edition, with a Times Book Club crest on the lower spine and without the gilt medallion on the front cover. After careful comparison with a first edition, these sheets appear to be identical to the first run of 3,000 copies. The sheets are trimmed at the foredge and base making this copy slightly smaller than a Smith Elder first edition. The typeface on the spine differs and there is a flat tooled line at the top and bottom of the spine and boards (gilt on the spine, blind on the boards.) The Book Club commenced in 1905 and the publication date of "Discovery" was 12th October 1905. The Book Club, and Horace Hooper's tenure at The Times as advertising director ended in 1908, with the arrival of the new proprietor, Lord Northcliffe, who was a substantial contributor to the "Discovery" expedition. In 36 years of specializing in Polar books, we have never had a London Times Book Club edition. We have seen copies with the Times Book Club sticker within, but not this binding. This binding is not recorded in Rosove, but conforms to Rosove 286. A1 within. 8vo, 2 volumes: 556pp, photogravure frontispiece from a drawing by Dr. Wilson, 7 color plates, 1 double page plate, 119 b&w mostly photographic illustrations, illustrations in text, 3 maps (&) 508pp, photogravure portrait, 6 color plates, 4 double page plates, 124 b&w mostly photographic illustrations, index, 2 maps. Contains both maps in the back pockets. Scattered light foxing in both volumes. With no advertisements at the rear, no extra slips and no dust wrapper, conforms to Rosove 286. Top edges gilt. Spines slightly sunned, a bit ruffled at spine head of Volume I.

Printed broadside measuring 765 by 505mm. Browned and chipped with some tape repairs to verso. A very delicate production on poor quality paper. Bacup, Court Theatre, [ Extremely rare. Returning Antarctic explorers invariably ended up on the lecture circuit as a way of either repaying debts or raising much needed income. This pi…ece is particularly interesting as it not only pre-dates the awful conclusion of Scott's expedition, but even Ponting's own return from the Antarctic. He didn't leave the Antarctic until February, 1912. One can only imagine the excitement and anticipation of the public on seeing Ponting's spectacular images. Not only would they have been amazed by the beauty of the photographs, but surely filled with optimism at the prospect of Scott and his men being the first to reach the South Pole. Indeed, just five days before the date of this performance, Tuesday 9 January, 1912, Scott's Polar Party separated from the accompanying crew members and the five of them headed to the South Pole. The death of the entire Polar Party was one of the great tragedies of the Heroic Age. This broadside is a poignant reminder of the public's hope and fascination with the expedition. Ephemeral material such as this is extremely rare, this example is not located on OCLC.
