In this treatise on the causes, symptoms and treatments of acute and chronic ailments, Aretaeus provides THE FIRST DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF MANY COMMON DISEASES, INCLUDING DIABETES - WHICH HE NAMED - DIPHTHERIA, NODOUS LEPROSY, TETANUS, ACUTE PNEUMONIA AND HEART MURMUR. This is the only surviving work of the Pneumatic school of medicine, which advocated, i.a., for patient compassion. Aretaeus' writing was unknown in the Medieval Latin world, and no manuscript survives from before the 15th century. The rediscovery of his lucid observations had a major influence on early modern medicine. A Latin translation had appeared two years prior. This edition of the original Greek text is based on a manuscript in the French Royal library and edited by Jacques Goupyl, chair of medicine at the Collège royal and a skilled Hellenist who penned the dedicatory letter in Greek.
