Addressed to 'Dear Mr Ross' and with good bold signature 'Milner'. The subject of the letter is the philanthropic 'settlement' Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel, founded in 1884 by Canon Barnett and Henrietta (DB…E), his wife. Milner begins the letter by giving his opinion that 'the Toynbee meeting must be put off', as 'Everything is in the melting pot.' No decision has been made regarding the new warden (following the departure of Edmund Harvey the previous year), and the future site of the settlement is uncertain. 'Nothing will be lost by waiting till we can confront the world with 1) a Man 2) a Policy.' As things stand, he does not know 'how I could appeal effectively to an Oxford audience to "come over & help us"'.

In den WarenkorbThe letter must have been written in 1855, as Fox Maule (later Earl of Dalhousie) was appointed Secretary of State for War on 8 February of that year, and Napier died on 16 September. 4pp, 16mo. Bifolium with black border. Loss to part of second leaf caused by removal from mount, resulting in loss of a few words of text, otherwi…se in good condition. Begins: 'In consequence of a letter from my Son William of your regt. [i.e. the King's Own Scottish Borderers] stating your wish to be appointed a Paymaster to the Out Pensioners, I wrote to my friend Mr Fox Maule the Secy. at War, & herewith give you the answer which I am sorry to say holds out but little prospect of success'. He proceeds to transcribe Fox Maule's letter, dated 'War Office | 8th. July', adding: 'You had better not depend much upon this, but use all other interest you may have in that quarter, as the more Irons [y]ou have in the fire the [bette]r!' He concludes 'Lady Napier [jo]ins me in best compliments to Mrs. Hamilton'. In a postscript he asks for Hamilton to give the Napiers' best regards to a 'friend', whose name has been torn away, 'at Chatham'. Napier's son Major-General William Craig Emilius Napier (1818-1903) would end his career as Governor of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

First French language edition of… the author's eye-witness account of Captain Cook's second voyage to the Cape of Good Hope as part of his circumnavigation in 1772-5. Sparrman (1748-1820),professor of zoology at Uppsala University and an outstanding pupil of Linnaeus, accompanied the voyage as assistant to the naturalists Johann and Georg Forster which is related in the first volume. Most of the work comprises his observations on the flora, fauna and mixed population of the Cape Colony made during expeditions into the interior of the country when working as a doctor in Cape Town. The description of termites and their nests is especially noteworthy. First published in Swedish in 1783, and immediately translated into the major European languages, the book became a bestseller. According to Schreiner's entry in the Oxford DNB, 'During the closure of the Vaal River drifts in 1895 he helped to commit the Cape to possible war by drafting the ultimatum to the Transvaal republic; but he was appalled by the Jameson raid later that year and soon afterwards broke finally with Rhodes. Although he opposed ending the British South Africa Company's charter, he chaired the Cape select committee which condemned Rhodes's conduct. In 1897 he gave evidence at the raid inquiry in London.'.
