Summary:When the Dutch East India Company was established in 1602, it lost no time in setting up trading posts throughout Asia. They secured shipping links - between the individual countries and with the Netherlands - and supplied large quantities of spices, tea, porcelain and Indian cotton in a constant stream. These trade goods from Asia were highly sought-after and left an enduring mark on European eating habits, dress and interior design. The Company's employees not infrequently traded on their own account in a wide range of relatively expensive products made by Asian craftsmen. They often had them made to order and shipped them back to the Netherlands - sometimes as contraband - on Company vessels. These costly Oriental objects were so greatly admired that connoisseurs came to the Netherlands from all over Europe to acquire them. Asian art was a source of inspiration for western craftsmen and an important influence on the European view of the world. Nevertheless Europeans soon felt the need to change the appearance of the products to suit their own tastes, and from this developed an exciting fusion of cultures. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has magnificent examples of valuable private commissions from China, Japan, India, Ceylon and the Dutch East Indies. The finest of them are discussed in Asian Splendour. -- Contents: The Dutch East India Company, Trade Goods and Treasures Trade with China and Japan Seventeenth and Early Eighteenth Century Trade with India and Ceylon Seventeenth and Early Eighteenth Century Living in Batavia Late Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Admiration and Interference Eighteenth Century Greed and Curiosity Sources of Quotations Bibliography.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Paperback; 21 x 27 cm; 0.5 Kg; 107 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear on the exterior, namely edge wear and some scuffs and wear signs on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with minor signs of wear.; Catalogue from the exhibition Two Hundred Treasures. Oriental Porcelain in The Netherlands, held at the Groninger Museum from November 2003 to May 2004.; In The Netherlands, it is not unusual to display an old Chinese dish against a wall or to have Oriental teaware in a cupboard, but this is nonetheless exceptional. Nowhere else in the West is Chinese and Japanese porcelain so clearly a part of daily life. Asian porcelain has graced interiors in The Netherlands for centuries, largely due to the enormous quantities imported during the 17th and 18th centuries by the VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, Dutch East India Company). Many Dutch museums thus include splendid examples of Chinese and Japanese export porcelain in their collections. This book introduces some of the most beauti- ful and interesting pieces from the following four museums: Haags Gemeentemuseum, the Groninger Museum, the Princessehof Leeuwarden and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. Besides an overview of Oriental export porcelain since the 14th century, this combined presentation by these museums also emphasises The Netherlands' remarkable wealth in this area. A brief introduction to each museum's collec- tion of Oriental porcelain and its provenance is followed by a selection of fifteen excellent examples from their collections. The detailed descriptions of these 60 pieces of Chinese and Japanese porcelain are accompanied by commentaries by the each of the four curators. This catalogue is edited by Professor Dr Christiaan Jörg, an internationally recognised expert in this field.

Zustand: as new. Salem, Ma. : Peabody Essex Museum; Amsterdam : Rijksmuseum; New Haven & London : Yale University Press [2015]. Hardcover. 356 pp. Ills. 31 cm. - A fascinating survey of the rich artistic and cultural impact of Asia on the Netherlands in the 17th century This lavishly illustrated catalogue discusses the Asian luxury goods that were imported into the Netherlands during the 17th century and demonstrates the overwhelming impact these works of art had on Dutch life and art during the Golden Age. Written by a team of 30 international scholars, this volume presents seven essays and catalogue entries on 150 works of art, including Dutch and Asian paintings, textiles, ceramics, lacquer, furniture, silver, diamonds, and jewelry. From the Dutch settlements throughout Asia-including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, China, and Japan-Dutch maritime traders brought an astonishing range of luxuries back to the Netherlands. Dutch consumers were enthralled with these foreign goods, which brought new colors, patterns, and textures to their interiors and wardrobes. As seen in the book's many illustrations, Dutch artists also found inspiration in these objects and incorporated them into portraits, genre scenes, and particularly still-life paintings. Dutch artists and craftspeople also adapted distinctly Asian technologies, such as porcelain and lacquer, to create new works of art inspired by Asia. This catalogue weaves together the complex stories of these diverse works of art and presents fascinating portraits of the dynamic cities of Amsterdam and Batavia (Jakarta)-the Dutch trade center in Asia during the 17th century. Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Paperback; 356 pages; 22.5 x 30.8 cm; 1.83 kg; LAST COPY. STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC BUT THE BOOK HAS A BUMP ON ONE CORNER.; Catalogue from the exhibitions held at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands from October 2015 to January 2016 and at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts from February to June 2016.; Rijksmuseum edition.; In the Golden Age, Dutch merchants shipped countless treasures from Asia to Amsterdam, enriching both increasingly prosperous Dutch households and the imagination of artists and craftspeople. Made of special, precious materials and adorned with intriguing exotic patterns no one had ever seen before, the Asian treasures caused a sensation. Fine white porcelain with blue designs from China, lacquer work from Japan, gems from India, silk fabrics and textiles from China, Japan and India, remarkably shaped shells, black ebony. The Dutch gasped at the beauty of it all and enthusiastically incorporated these treasures into their hitherto more modest interiors. Not only the super-rich, but also a large part of the growing middle class could afford to buy these exclusive items. Artists shaped new ways of looking at the world around them. In essays and entries by over thirty expert authors, this catalogue examines how a culture of luxury developed in the Golden Age.
