Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A very close to new copy. Laminated hardcover. Julius Haast (1822?87) came to New Zealand late in 1858 to examine the new colony's potential for German immigration. He met Ferdinand Hochstetter and joined him on geological and topographic surveys of Auckland and Nelson Provinces, an experience that broadened his hobby interest in geology. By 1860 he was a competent geologist, able to survey the Grey and Buller districts for the Nelson Province and to advise the Canterbury Province on the Lyttelton rail-tunnel route through the Port Hills. In Canterbury, Haast was appointed Provincial Geologist (1861-68, 1874-76), founded the Canterbury Museum and was Professor of Geology for Canterbury University College. This book, illustrated by many of Haast's drawings, focuses on his pioneer scientific work in the central Southern Alps. Particularly it covers his contributions to topographical and geological mapping, and his innovative studies of the glacial geology of the region. His German doctorate in science and Austrian and British knighthoods were awarded largely for this work. As well as following Haast?s journeys and relating his story about the evidence for vast glaciation of the Westland and Canterbury regions, chapters of the book examine the glacial record in the Southern Alps back to the beginning of the Ice Age, two and a half million years ago, and up to the present day.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is about ideas on the nature and causes of temporal change in the species composition of vegetation. In particular it examines the diverse processes of inter action of plants with their environment, and with one another, through which the species composition of vegetation becomes established. The first chapter considers the general nature of vegetation and the ways in which vegetation change is perceived by ecologists. Chapters 2 and 3 provide essential background about the relationships between plants and their abiotic and biotic environment. Anyone who is familiar with the fundamentals of plant ecology may prefer to pass over Chapters 2 and 3 which, of necessity, cover their subject matter very briefly. Sequences of development of vegetation on new volcanic rocks, sand dunes and glacial deposits, respectively, are outlined in Chapters 4, 5 and 6. Chapter 7 is about the patterns of vegetation change which occur in severe habitats around the world, and Chapter 8 discusses wetlands. Chapter 9 discusses the diverse responses of temperate forests to a variety of disturbing influences, and Chapter 10 deals with change in the species-rich forests of the Tropics. Chapter 11 treats, in detail, the empirical and inferential data on the biological processes occurring during vegetation change sequences. Chapter 12 considers the plant community phenomena which are implicated in the development of theory about vegetation change. The final chapter, Chapter 13, draws the diverse themes together into a unified theoretical structure by which the vegetation change phenomena may be understood.

Wraps. Zustand: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. ii, 58 pages. Tables. Figures. Footnotes. References. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Cover soiled. This work addresses External Radiation Exposure, Internal Radioactivity, Effects of Radiation on Personnel, Claims for Radiation Injury to Personnel, Audits and Reviews, and Abnormal Occurrences. Radiation exposures to Navy and civilian personnel monitored for radiation associated with U.S> Naval nuclear propulsion plans are summarized in this report. navy personnel manned fifteen tenders, four submarine bases, one moored training ship, 119 nuclear-powered submarines and sixteen nuclear-powered surface which were in operation at the end of 1992. Eight shipyards were engaged in construction, overhaul or refueling of these ships. The benefits of nuclear propulsion in our most capable combatant ships have long been recognized, and our nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines form the most invulnerable element of the U.S. strategic deterrent. The United States Navy Nuclear Propulsion community consists of Naval Officers and Enlisted members who are specially trained to run and maintain the nuclear reactors that power the submarines and aircraft carriers. Operating more than 80 nuclear-powered ships, the United States Navy is currently the largest naval force in the world. The United States Navy first began research into the applications of nuclear power in 1946 at the Manhattan Project's nuclear power-focused laboratory to develop a nuclear power plant. Eight men were assigned to the project, including Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, who is known as the "Father of the Nuclear Navy." The first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, was launched and commissioned in 1954. The development of the nuclear-powered submarine greatly increased capabilities . Shortly to follow in utilizing nuclear technology was the aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1961, the USS Enterprise was the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
