Fue el primero que rescató del olvido la tradición republicana y federal tan sólidamente arraigada en la España contemporánea. Por más que la dictadura de Franco borró de la memoria y condenó sin paliativos el liberalismo y el republicanismo, o el socialismo y el anarquismo, ni pudo con la memoria oculta y reprimida de los españoles vencidos en 1939 ni con el poder que la historia tiene cuando se hace con la objetividad documental y el compromiso ético que se le reclama como ciencia social. C. A. M. Hennessy hizo su investigación en fecha muy temprana, en 1962 en Oxford, y en 1966, al traducirse al castellano, lanzó a la palestra pública nada menos que dos temas tabúes y oficialmente proscritos: el republicanismo y el federalismo. Era el primer libro que se publicaba sobre el primer intento de organización democrática, el sexenio comprendido entre la revolución gloriosa de 1868 y la Primera República de 1873. Además, el Partido Republicano Federal, liderado por Pi y Margall, había sido protagonista indudable de dicho sexenio. Su programa político pretendía situar a España en la primera línea de la modernidad política, social y cultural. Los contenidos básicos de un Estado social y democrático de derecho, que hoy tenemos establecido en la Constitución de 1978, estaban ya en los debates y programas de aquel partido, como también los perfiles básicos de lo que al cabo de un siglo la actual Constitución ha consagrado como el Estado de las Autonomías. Por eso, el libro de Hennessy está vivo y respira. Su lectura suscita debates para el presente y nos concierne en sus análisis. De ningún modo está superado.
