We have paid to have this book professionally rebound to retain an antiquarian look and feel, the spine has bright gilt lettering against a Moroccan style black label. Edition illustrée d'un portrait de l'auteur en frontispice, ainsi que de lettrines et culs-de-lampes en noir. Reliure de l'époque en demi-chagrin rouge, dos à nerfs avec caissons et titre en doré, plats recouverts de toile rouge, gardes de papier marbré. Très légère insolation de la reliure, quelques rousseurs, dans l'ensemble un bel exemplaire.

Rare second edition printed in an unspecified small number. The first edition was published in Brussels in 1808 in two volumes. The author (Maastricht 1743-1818) chose a medical career and became a member of the Académie de Bruxelles. In this long study he deals with the formation of a painting collection and its technical aspects such as cleaning , restoration, safeguarding against deterioration etc. He also discusses the merits of different schools of paintings and e.g. the system that ''de Piles'' had devised to judge the quality of paintings. He was one of the first to rehabilitate the 17th century Dutch School of painting which was all but forgotten in the 18th century. (See Éveline Koolhaas-Grosfeld in Septentrion 1987 issue 3, pp 29-39).

Elle est illustrée par un titre gravé et 32 belles planches hors-texte en couleurs montrant des fossiles marins, avec de nombreux coquillages. Ces planches ont été gravées en sépia et coloriées à la main. On trouve à la fin une liste des souscripteurs avec d'intéressantes notices des cabinets de curiosités en leur possession : Camper, Jacobs, M. de Bournon, van Marum, Gigot d'Orcy, M. de Joubert, Loménie de Brienne, Walkiers de Saint-Amand, Seumoy, Charles de Ligne. François-Xavier Burtin (1743-1818) était le médecin personnel de Charles de Lorraine et possédait un beau cabinet d'histoire naturelle. La plupart des spécimens représentés ici figuraient dans sa collection. Dans l'explication des planches, il mentionne les autres collectionneurs qui lui ont communiqué des pièces qui sont représentées. Cette "Oryctographie de Bruxelles" lui est l'occasion d'exprimer ses idées sur la formation des différentes couches terrestres et la "théorie de la Terre". A la suite de cet ouvrage, son nom sera utilisé pour dénommer un genre de palmier fossile, le Burtinia, et un coquillage du Givétien, le stringocephalus Burtini. Très bel exemplaire.
