Cloth. Zustand: Good. Green cloth. Number 164 out of 725 printed. Signed by the author on the copyright page. 210 pp. Full page and in text illustrations throughout. A mostly biographical study of Alexander Anderson, considering to be America's "first skilled wood engraver," (American Antiquarian Society) and especially noted for his attention to detail. While he started in a career in medicine, he focused only on engraving after losing many of his family members during an outbreak of yellow fever. Decorative bookplate of John S. Wood on the inside front cover. This was created by William Fowler Hopson, an artist, who painted, engraved and etched, although he is perhaps best known for his bookplate designs (See Smithsonian Art Museum website). This is dated 1909. GOOD condition. Minor scuffing and toning to the covers, with scuffing along the hinges and extremities. First several pages bear the evidence of previous water exposure, and look to have been unstuck from each other, resulting in superficial lifting of the surface of the paper along the lower edges.
