True complete set of the three volume catalogue, including more scarce English supplement, which accompanied the influential 2003 masochism exhibition at Neue Galerie Graz/ Universalmuseum Joanneum. 150 Artists were featured, including Pierre Molinier, Gina Pane, Tom of Finland, Nobuyoshi Araki, Joel-Peter Witkin, Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dalí, Man Ray, Cindy Sherman, Helmut Newton, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Band I 'Visionen des Masochismus: Essays Und Texte', 477pgs, contains essays, in German, exploring how masochism is expressed, represented, and conceptualized in visual and performance art, particularly in 20th-century and contemporary art. Essays by Peter Weibel, Georges Didi-Huberman, Steven Shaviro, Rita Felski, Isabelle Azoulay, Doug Rice, and many more, interspersed with color and black and white images. Band II 'Visionen des Masochismus: In Der Kunst' contains 515 pgs of color and black and white representations of works included in the show, organized by artist, and introduced by an essay, in German, by the editor, Peter Weibel. 248pg English supplement, 'Phantom of Desire, Visions of Masochism, essays and texts' contains translations of all essays in Bands I and II. All three volumes are softcover and in excellent condition. Bindings solid and square throughout. Interiors and clean, bright, and unmarked. Minor shelf wear to edges and corners, with the english volume having a minor shallow bump to the top right corner lasting about half the book. but not effecting text or overall quality much. Some very light rubbing and scuffing to glossy pictorial covers, visible in bright light. Slight dust soiling to the corners of the page blocks. Overall excellent copy of all three volumes in this scarce complete set.
