Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1st. English edition after the French. Volume one only. This folio size volume seems to have old boards but a newer cloth spine that seems to never have been mounted to the pages. All pages are untrimmed and the spine has a piece of cheese cloth type material holding the pages together. This would come right off and page signatures are mostly loose for easy rebinding. The plate no 11/12 is missing presume it was the Moscow 2 page view. The rest of the numbered plates go up to 112 and are all there. Some other plates and the 2 maps are also present. The view of Spahan is 6 pages long. No bad water stains or foxing. A few 2 page views have some splitting. Overseas will require extra postage.

In den WarenkorbOriginal folding copper engraved view of Rama. Plate dimensions 23 x 61 cm, overall sheet size 32 x 61.5 cm. A good, dark impression. Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1726/7) was a Dutch artist and traveller, born in the Hague. He made two large tours and published illustrated books with his observations of people, buildings, plants and animals. During his first tour, he visited Rome, Egypt, Jeruselum and Cyprus, where he stayed among the Dutch merchants in Smyrna and Constantinople. From 1684 he worked in Venice with the painter Johann Carl Loth, returning in 1693 to The Hague, where he sold his souvenirs. In 1698 he published his book with drawings, which was a success and was translated in several languages. Among his drawings were the first pictures of the interior of the Great Pyramid and Jerusalem that became known in Europe. During his second tour in 1701 he visited the Samoyeds in northern Russia. In Moscow he became acquainted with emperor Peter the Great; de Bruijn painted his nieces, and the paintings were sent to possible candidates for marriage. In late April 1703, De Brujin left Moscow along with the party of an Armenian merchants from Isfahan. De Bruijin and the Armenians sailed down the Moscow River, the Oka and the Volga, eventually reaching Astrakhan. Leaving the borders of the Russian state, de Brujin arrived to Persia, where he made drawings of towns like Isfahan and Persepolis (17041705). He continued to Java and returned to Persia, Russia, and ultimately the Netherlands. His drawings of Persepolis, a city destroyed by Alexander the Great, caused a sensation. They were the best prints available to western scholars. De Bruyn's second book, Reizen over Moskovie was not such a success, as he was accused of plagarism. De Bruyn died in Utrecht. It is not known when and where he was buried.

Zustand: Very Good. A superb large scale panorama of Isfahan from the time when it was the capital of Iran.Le Bruyn was a Dutch artist and traveler. He was a painter for emperor Peter the Great as well. Of particular interest are his descriptions of Nizhny Novgorod and his drawings of Persepolis, a city destroyed by Alexander the Great. Also, his talent for landscapes is truly present in two large panoramas of Moscow & "Spahan".Le Bruyn left for this trans-Asia expedition in 1701 at the age of 50, taking seven years to reach the East-Indies "by way of Muscovy & Persia." It detailed the most important parts of each country including their cities, native people, natural flora and fauna, and antiquities., Image Size : 300x1875 (mm), 11.75x73.75 (Inches), Platemark Size : 305x1880 (mm), 12x74 (Inches), Paper Size : 405x1985 (mm), 15.875x78.125 (Inches), Black & White, Copper Engraving.
