Soft cover. Zustand: As New. In Scream - the lead story in Ajay Navaria's collection the unnamed protagonist is told at the outset, Crime is very seductive. And revenge a trickster. The narrator rejects having his identity constrained by the cruel monikers assigned by the caste Hindus of his village or the supposed refuge of the Christian church. He occupies an 'unclaimed terrain', as do many of Navaria's characters. Journeying from a Dantewada village to the town of Nagpur and from there to Mumbai, the Byronic protagonist is raped, works as a masseur and then as a gigolo even while pursuing his education. The city teaches him the many meanings of labor, and he is freed-if ultimately destroyed by its infinite possibilities for self-invention. As complex as they are political, Navaria's characters-ranging from a brahmin peon to a dalit male prostitute are neither black nor white, neither clearly good nor evil. They inhabit a grey zone, they linger in the transitional passageway between past object and future subject, casteism and democracy. Unclaimed Terrain heralds the arrival of a bold new voice in Indian literature.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This book is the first close study of the growing body of contemporary Hindi-language Dalit literature in India. It goes beyond recognizing and celebrating the subaltern speaking, emphasizing instead the sociopolitical perspectives and literary strategies of a range of contemporary Dalit writers working in Hindi. It asks questions such as: what makes Dalit literature Dalit? What makes it good? Why is this genre important, and where does it oppose or intersect with other bodies of Indian literature? It also follows the debate among Dalit writers as they establish a specifically Dalit literary critical approach, underscoring the significance of the Dalit literary sphere as a 'counterpublic' generating contemporary Dalit social and political identities.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The essays in Indian Sound Cultures, Indian Sound Citizenship argue that sound, from the cinema hall to the recording studio and the public festival ground, is inextricably linked to issues of citizenship, identity, and belonging in India. Together, the contributions in this volume investigate the sonic turn in the study of South Asia by understanding sound in its own social and cultural contexts, and by exploring the diverse ways in which sound has been and continues to be crucial to the ideological construction of a unifying postcolonial Indian nation-state. Integrating interdisciplinary scholarship at the nexus of sound studies and South Asian studies with questions of nation/nationalism, postcolonialism, cinema, and popular culture in India, Indian Sound Cultures, Indian Sound Citizenship offers fresh and sophisticated approaches to understanding the sonic world of the subcontinent.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Laura R. Brueck emphasizes the sociopolitical perspectives and literary strategies of a range of contemporary Dalit (low caste) writers working in Hindi, exploring what makes Dalit literature 'Dalit,' why it is important, and where it opposes or intersects with other bodies of Indian literature. She follows the debate among Dalit writers as they establish a specific literary critical approach, underscoring the significance of the Dalit literary sphere as a 'counterpublic' generating contemporary Dalit social and political identities. Brueck then performs close readings of contemporary Hindi Dalit short stories, focusing on the aesthetic and stylistic strategies deployed by writers whose class, gender, and geographic backgrounds shape their distinct voices. By reading Dalit literature as literature, this study unravels its aesthetic innovations as well as the complexities of its sociopolitical and identity-based origins.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Working within a global frame, The Routledge Companion to Postcolonial and Decolonial Literature considers postcolonial and decolonial literary works across multiple genres, languages, and both regional and transnational networks. The Companion extends beyond the entrenched hegemony of the postcolonial or Anglophone novel to explore other literary formations and vernacular exchanges. It foregrounds questions of language and circulation by emphasizing translation, vernacularity, and world literature. This text expands the linguistic, regional, and critical foci of the emergent field of decolonial studies, pushing against the normative currents of postcolonial literary studies, and offers a critical consideration of both.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Writing Resistance is the first close study of the growing body of contemporary Hindi-language Dalit (low caste) literature in India. The Dalit literary movement has had an immense sociopolitical and literary impact on various Indian linguistic regions, yet few scholars have attempted to situate the form within contemporary critical frameworks. Laura R. Brueck's approach goes beyond recognizing and celebrating the subaltern speaking, emphasizing the sociopolitical perspectives and literary strategies of a range of contemporary Dalit writers working in Hindi. Brueck explores several essential questions: what makes Dalit literature Dalit What makes it good Why is this genre important, and where does it oppose or intersect with other bodies of Indian literature She follows the debate among Dalit writers as they establish a specifically Dalit literary critical approach, underscoring the significance of the Dalit literary sphere as a 'counterpublic' generating contemporary Dalit social and political identities.Brueck then performs close readings of contemporary Hindi Dalit literary prose narratives, focusing on the aesthetic and stylistic strategies deployed by writers whose class, gender, and geographic backgrounds shape their distinct voices. By reading Dalit literature as literature, this study unravels the complexities of its sociopolitical and identity-based origins.
