In his Croonian Lecture "Langrish notes the 'surprising discoveries' made of late with regard to electrical fluid travelling instantaneously through the bodies of men 'communicating with each other by a cane, sword,' or other conductor 'do in some measure give us an idea of the great subtilty and velocity of the nervous fluid.' The 'electric matter,' he concludes, 'may be very similar to the motion and action of the nervous Aether'" (A. Muri, The Enlightenment Cyborg: A History of Communications and Control in the Human Machine, 1660-1830, pp. 73-74). .
