In den WarenkorbOriginal Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine+. Scarce First Edition (rare both in commerce and in institutional collections) of this account of the Canary Islands by the nineteenth-century Boston naturalist. Crown 8vo (186 x 111mm): 140pp, with tissue-guarded frontispiece ("Peak of Tenerife from Ycod del Alto"), full-page map of the Madeira and Canary islands, two woodcut vignettes, and several tables. Original floral-patterned forest-green cloth, red leather lettering piece gilt. Rear blanks largely torn away and now skillfully replaced with matching period end sheets, binding lightly rubbed, one page very skillfully mended (by careful sewing!), but a superb survival, with pages and plates virtually pristine. American Imprints 23586. Not in Smith (American Travelers Abroad). Browne, a polymath who wrote on a variety of scientific subjects, traveled to the Canary Islands 100 kilometers west of Morocco for several months in 1833 to explore the archipelago's geology and mineralogy, botany, zoology, mollusca and shells, meteorology, and social conditions, and report his findings to a group of Boston sponsors. His trip centered on Tenerife, the largest and most populous island, and included three ascents of Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain and third tallest volcano in the world. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine Editions Ltd is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association, and we subscribe to its codes of ethics.).…

In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. [London: Printed by A. Strahan, 1804]. Inscribed by the Author to an Important Irish Politician and Book Collector [C] Cruise, William [1751/2-1824]. An Essay on the Law of Dignities, Or Titles of Honour. [London: Printed by A. Strahan, 1804]. 109 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary calf, rebacked retaining existing spine with lettering piece, hinges reinforced. A few minor nicks to boards, corners bumped, hinges cracked, early owner bookplate (of James Correy) to front pastedown. Moderate toning to text, presentation inscription at head of title page (to "Wogan Browne, Esqr / from the Author."). $650. * First edition. According to a note on the verso of the title page, this "essay constitutes a part of an extensive work on the Laws of England respecting real property. But as the subject of it is interesting to many persons who are not of the profession, a few copies have been printed separately, that the author may be enabled to present them to his friends." One of those friends appears to have been Thomas Wogan Browne [1758?-1812], an Irish magistrate, politician and book collector. His large and well-curated private library, numbering some 6,000 volumes, was sold at auction in 1812. He and Cruise were both members of the Royal Irish Academy. The "extensive work" is Cruise's Digest of the Laws of England Respecting Real Property (first edition 1795), long a standard treatise on the subject. A second edition of The Law of Dignities was issued in 1823. The first edition is rare. OCLC locates 9 copies, 1 in the United States at Georgetown.
