In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good Only. A scarce biography of Mrs Brookfield Illustrated with full page engravings throughout Charles Hallam Elton Brookfield (19 May 1857 20 October 1913) was a British actor, author, playwright and journalist, including for The Saturday Review. His most famous work for the theatre was The Belle of Mayfair (1906). Brookfield achieved success in a 20-year acting career, including with the company of Squire Bancroft at London's Haymarket Theatre in the 1880s. After he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, in 1898, Brookfield focused on writing plays and musical theatre. In his last years, he was Britain's Examiner of Plays, even though he had been criticised as biased against various playwrights and also for writing a particularly risqué comedy in 1908. He and his wife together wrote Mrs Brookfield and her Circle. In original cloth binding. Externally rubbed with bumping and wear to the head and tail of the spine. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are spotted. Good Only. None (illustrator). book.…

In den Warenkorb2 vols. 8vo. 2 vols. 8vo. Brookfield [née Elton], Jane Octavia (1821-1896), literary hostess and writer, was born on 25 March 1821, at Clifton, near Bristol, the youngest of the eight daughters (there were also five sons) of Sir Charles Abraham Elton, sixth baronet (1778-1853), of Cleveland Court, near Bristol, and his wife, Sarah Smith (d. 1830). Her father, who had possessed literary inclinations in his youth, was the friend of Lamb and Coleridge and the author of an elegy, 'The Brothers', written after his two eldest sons had drowned in the Bristol Channel, and commended by Southey to Landor. In 1837 the Eltons moved to Southampton. The teenaged Jane, 5 feet 9 inches tall (an immense height for a woman in the Victorian period) and nicknamed Glumdalclitch by her father, was by all accounts of striking appearance. Courted by the newly arrived curate of All Saints' Church, William Henry Brookfield (1809-1874), she became engaged at the end of 1838. The wedding was delayed for some time while attempts were made to find him a better job. The couple were eventually married, on 18 November 1841, eighteen months after Brookfield's appointment to the curacy of St James's, Piccadilly, London. Bound in three quarter, red calf by Howell Liverpool, some staining else very good. The copy of Henry Lennox D'Aubigné Hopkinson, first Baron Colyton (1902-1996), diplomatist and politician with gift insscription to him. …
