In den WarenkorbAn attractive item on four unpaginated folio pages, in a bifolium. Uncommon. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased, but not folded, with small closed tear at head of first leaf. Drophead title: 'No. 7 (New Series) July 1935. / A Broadside / Editors: W. B. Yeats and F. R. Higgins; Musical Editor, Arthur Duff. Published monthly at the Cuala Press, One Hundred and Thirty Three Lower Baggot Street, Dublin.' At bottom left of first page: '300 copies only.' At foot of last page: 'The illustrations on this Broadside are by Harry Kernoff, A.R.H.A.' Beneath the drop-head title is a large illustration of a man, newspaper under his arm, tramping home on a windy day along a country path to a cottage where a woman waits. It is coloured in green, pink, red, brown and grey. Beneath the illustration begins the poem to which it refers: Padraic Colum's 'A Ballad Maker', beginning 'Once I loved a maiden fair, / Over the hills and far away, / Lands she had and lovers to spare, / Over the hills and far away.' At the foot of the second page is Duff's score for the poem, which concludes at the head of the third page. It is followed by an illustration of an exotically-dressed lady washing her feet while sitting on steps in a Dublin street. It is coloured in green, blue, purple, red and orange. It is followed by an anonymous eight-line poem titled 'The Spanish Lady', beginning: 'As I was walking through Dublin City / At the hour of twelve in the night / Who should I see but a Spanish Lady / Washing her feet by candle light;'. At the head of the last page is a short musical score, headed 'Tune to "The Spanish Lady"'. The item is from the Lynd archive, and there are pencil notes of keys to both scores, apparently by Sylvia Lynd. Also in pencil, on the first page, is what looks like the word 'Oil', but by comparison with other items from the archive it is the price: '6d'.

Between the second and third parts of the poem, on the second page, is the score of its music. The poem ends on the third page, and is followed by an illustration, in red, green, grey, orange and yellow, of the pharaoh's daughter finding a baby in the rushes. Underneath this is the poem 'Pharao's [sic] Daughter', 'Attributed to Michael Moran - "Zozimus."'), beginning 'In Agypt's land contaygious to the Nile,'. On the last page is a second musical score, headed 'Tune to "Pharao's Daughter"'. The item is from the Lynd archive, and there are pencil notes to the scores, apparently by Sylvia Lynd. Beside the first she writes 'Good', and beside the second she makes a note of two alternative keys.

Good. Laid down on archival tissue. Lower right corner reinstated. Size 21 x 30.5 Inches. This 1939 United Press and Columbia Broadcasting System map of the world ravaged by war. The political map at center belies the violence then rampaging across the globe, but its results are apparent. Nazi Germany encompasses Austria and half of Czechoslovakia and Poland, while the Soviet Unit occupies Poland's other half. War had been raging in Asia since 1937, mostly ignored here, apart from Manchukuo. Dashed lines trace global maritime trade routes and provide the distances. The Pictorial Border The border consists of printed photographs illustrating the European war, including the signing of the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, Nazi Germany's invasions of Poland and Czechoslovakia, and German ships set ablaze. Other images celebrate technological advances, such as the inaugural Pan-American trans-Atlantic clipper service and the 1939 New York World's Fair. Pope Pius XI's death is remembered, as is the crowning of Pius XII. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the United Press and Columbia Broadcasting System in 1939. One example is cataloged in OCLC as being part of the collection at the Osher Map Library at the University of Southern Maine. References: Rumsey 8136.000. OCLC 55796954.

Good. Infill to left and right edges. Heavy toning. Light wear along original fold lines. Text on verso. Size 22 x 14 Inches. This is a fascinating 1900 American Press Association broadside of the Boxer Rebellion its syndicated content. It is a unique example of how syndication agencies promoted themselves to newspapers around the country. Syndication agencies provided newspapers with up-to-date reporting that could be printed in regional publications, giving small town papers national and global coverage. A Closer Look The broadside features six illustrations that subscribing newspapers could use, each providing insight into the Boxer Rebellion. The top left is a map covering from Bohai Bay (Gulf of Pechili) to Beijing (Pekin) by way of Tianjin (Tientsin). Other towns and villages are marked, along with the railway connecting Beijing with Tianjin and Tangku. Three of the other illustrations are portraits of important individuals, such as the American general leading the relief expedition, the British customs agent in Beijing, and the six ambassadors who were in Beijing during the event. The final two illustrations include a street view of Beijing and a depiction of captured Boxers awaiting execution. Newspaper Syndication News syndication is a system whereby a central press organization creates and sells content to other newspapers. One of the earliest cases of syndication in the United States happened in 1841, when a newspaperman in New York City printed special editions of President John Tyler's annual speech to Congress and then sold them to various newspapers. The first syndicate was operating by the end of 1861. The American Press Association (who published this piece) was one of the first news agencies in the United States concerned only with providing syndicated material. They promoted their work with pieces like the present broadside. Newspaper syndication grew nationally, leading to publishing conglomerates and a homogenization of American news. By the turn of the 20th century, news agencies were providing their clients with complete printing plates of their material (so each newspaper did not have to set their own type), which allowed images to be syndicated as well. The Boxer Rebellion or Yihetuan Movement The Boxer Rebellion or Yihetuan Movement (1899 - 1901, ?????) was an anti-foreign anti-imperialist uprising marked by proto-nationalism in northeastern China. The rebellion was largely a response to Christian missionary activity in China and was initially supported by the Qing Empress Dowager Cixi and her ministers who distrusted the radical and unpredictable peasant movement but sympathized with their goal of driving foreign influence out of China. In June of 1900, some 20,000 Boxers, convinced that their spiritual and martial prowess gave them immunity to foreign weapons, attacked the Chinese Christians and foreign nationals living in Beijing's Legation Quarter. Although terrible violence ensued, the Legation Quarter was able to mount a ragtag defense which is outlined on this map. Relief came about a month later in the form of the Eight-Nation Alliance China Relief Force, which, with an army of some 20,000, defeated the Boxers and occupied Beijing, as well as several other northern Chinese cities. The atrocities and looting that ensued, particularly at the hands of Russian and Japanese forces, are well documented and horrifying. Publication History and Census This broadside was created and published by the American Press Association in 1900. This is the only known surviving example.
